Chargers Improve, But Drop Close One To Lions

Varsity Women's Basketball : Louisa Lions vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers (0 - 2) looked to improve Friday night, and they did just that in a tight match up against the Louisa Lions (2 - 0). The Chargers passed the ball better, didn't turn the ball over as much, and shot better with free throws compared to Monday night's disappointing loss. In a game that came down to the final minute, it was the Lions who came out on top 51 - 49.

The game started off slightly sluggish, as both teams' offenses started off slowly. The Chargers were trailing 8 - 2 in the final two minutes, but their offense flared to life and quickly put up 6 unanswered points to end the first quarter and make things all locked up at 8 - 8. Junior Sydney Collins had a big first quarter, collecting 4 of the Chargers 8 points and helping set up the offense with 3 rebounds.

Going into the second quarter, the Chargers came onto the court with the same fiery intensity they left it with. They quickly put up 6 more points to make it 12 unanswered and a big lead against the Lions. This didn't discourage the Lions however, who were able to respond late in the quarter with 6 unanswered points of their own to keep the game close. Senior Lachaunda Patterson was also able to knock in the Chargers' first 3-pointer of the year before the half ended. Going to the half, the games was still deadly tight as the Chargers led 22 - 21.

The third quarter was one to forget for the Chargers, as problems that had plagued them in their season opener popped up again. After only turning the ball over 6 times in the first half, the Chargers turned the ball over 9 times in the third quarter alone setting up the Lions multiple times for points. Despite the turnovers and shooting problems, the Chargers were able to pull it together late to quickly put up 4 points in the final minute of the quarter. Louisa held the lead though, with a score of 36 - 30.

The final quarter was one fullof excitement and more scoring than any other quarter. The Lions dominated in the opening minutes, but the Chargers made things interesting as the quarter ticked on. With an incredible 3-pointer from Charger No. 44 to electrify the the crowd, the Chargers started connecting on more shots. The Lions faced pressure they hadn't seen since the second quarter and the game grew intense. In the final minutes, multiple Lions hit pivotal free shots to ensure a Lions victory for the night with a final score of 51 - 49.

Despite the loss, the Chargers showed much more improvement on both sides of the ball. They will still look to improve on a shot percentage of 38%, but other than that the team is on the right track towards success. They will stay at home to face the struggling Eastern View Cyclones (0 - 2) on Monday night.
