Varsity Girl's Soccer: Chancellor Chargers vs. Massaponax Panthers
By: Greg Wolfe
Nothing seemed to go right for the Chancellor Chargers (1-1-0) Thursday night, as the Massaponax Panthers rolled to a 8-0 slaughter rule victory. Tyria Smalls for the Panthers scored three goals, while her counterpart Caitlyn Kirtley scored two goals of her own as they lead the Panthers offense all night.
Early on, the Chargers seemed to be a bit sluggish. The Panthers were ahead of every pass and putting lots of early pressure on Senior Goalkeeper Lexi Lawson. Smalls was able to break open the scoring about ten minutes in, with her first goal of the night. The Chargers were never really able to cover, and struggled keeping possession.
The Panthers crowded the box later on in the first half, and Kirtley appeared to knock in her first goal of the night thanks to an interesting assist. Five minutes later, she was alone with the net and was able to knock in her second goal of the night allowing the Panthers to start slipping away.
The second half had the Chargers desperately looking for some offense early on, but their offensive fire was quickly doused and the Panthers took total control. The Panthers, to simply put it, were everywhere tonight. The Panthers were able to counter every move and their defense played extrodinarily well after suffering some injuries earlier on in the season.
With just under ten minutes to play, Amber Jacobs took a desperate shot from almost 40 yards away that found the back of the net and enacted the slaughter rule for the game. The Panthers, walked briskly away with a win leaving the Chargers with a bad taste in their mouth.
The Chargers get to come back home and host Riverbend for the "Route 3 Rivalry" next Wednesday, and that's more than enough time for the girls to find their mojo and get back on track against some familiar faces.
