Varsity Boys Soccer: Jamestown Eagles vs. Chancellor Chargers
By: Greg Wolfe
Tuesday night started out as a hot one for the Jamestown Eagles, as their offense surged early and left the Chancellor Chargers (4-1) in a hole to dig out of. A late rally showed the team's true fighting potential, but in the end it wasn't enough as the Eagles pulled away with a 2-1 win.
The game had a crazy start for the Eagles, who took advantage of a Chargers' squad showed a new lineup due to some sickness in the team. Within the first 15 minutes of the game, the Eagles had a big 2-0 advantage that would prove to be a rough battle for the Chargers.
Both teams' goalkeepers were at work, as both pulled together multiple saves and kept the goals to a minimum. The Chargers' Josh Reid had a big night, as he had as many as three diving stops that prevented a tie or win from becoming unreachable.
Down by two at halftime, the Chargers still weren't discouraged. Chris Escobar and Nico Vega led the charge down the field and the Chargers finally started to dent the Eagles' defense. Offensively, the Eagles were getting less possession time and their control on the game started to hang in the balance.
With 9 minutes left to play, Eli Carr found himself in the corner and forced a desperation move by Eagles player David Stinson. His hand ball put one of the deadliest penalty kickers in Virginia at the line, and Ruben Niamien lived up to the hype. He knocked the ball into the left corner of the net, and suddenly the Chargers were back in it.
The offense perked up and things started to run in the usual, full gear. The ball was pushed down the field more often, and the Eagles were forced to play in desperation to keep the game from going into overtime. Sadly for the Chargers, the Eagles were able to accomplish their goal and end the game in regulation.
The Chargers still looked good on the awkward night, and this is just a bump in the road for a team that may find itself facing this same opponent later on in the season. Their focus for now will shift to Thursday where they will face the Eastern View Cyclones, who will be their first conference foe of the year.
