No Stopping Chargers, Impressive Power in Big Win Against Cavaliers

Varsity Volleyball : Caroline Cavaliers vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers showcased their dominating power against the Caroline Cavaliers Wednesday night. Impressive performances by freshman Joselyn Jones and senior captain Brittany Margelos helped spark the Chargers offense to an easy sweep of the Cavaliers winning all three games and the match. There were some early miscues in the first game by Chancellor, but they smoothed it out as the night went on and just looked overall immensely impressive.

In Game 1, the Chargers were led by their team captain who was in the only black jersey in a sea of white as No. 10 Brittany Margelos cruised during the start and the end of the match. Her nine point drive started things, and she ended it with a 4 point drive making the Cavaliers look dazed on the court. A 25-17 match score doesn't show Chancellor's true dominance over the match however, as penalties and miscommunication allowed the Cavaliers to keep it somewhat close.

In Game 2, it was all Chargers. Showcasing permanent dominance throughout the entire game, the Chargers put on multiple drives easily shutting down the Cavaliers winning 25-15. Every time a Charger spiked the ball, especially senior Eryn Suttle, the immense pow could be heard throughout the entire school. Chancellor played cleaner and looked like the dominant team that they have shown to be.

Lastly there was Game 3, which again the Chargers showed no letting up and easily shut down the Cavaliers and walked briskly into the night with a win. Team captain Brittany Margelos saw much more playing time than the second game, continuing to support long drives against an exhausted Cavaliers squad. Caroline did show some power as the match winded down, but it was already too late as Chancellor cruised to a 25-14 game win. There was no stopping the lady Chargers tonight.

The Chargers will look to continue their success as they travel to King George tomorrow (September 29) and the Cavaliers will head home to play hosts to the Spotsylvania Knights.

Chargers Can't Hold On To Early Lead, Cyclones Storm Back

Varsity Field Hockey : Eastern View Cyclones vs. Chancellor Chargers

A powerful Eastern View field hockey team visited the Chancellor Chargers on a bleak Monday afternoon. It was a very quiet start to the game until the Chargers surprised everyone and squeezed a shot in as the first half ended. For the rest of the game, though, it was Eastern View all the way as they cruised to four goals in the second half and quieted any thoughts of an upset finishing with a win 4 - 1.
The Chargers charge the field

For the second consecutive week, the Chargers' offense struggled to maintain possession, which consequentially put major stress on their defense. The Chargers goalie Naiomi Nichols had another great game at the goal today, collecting five saves and maintaining a good wall that made it tough for the Cyclones' offense to score. A breath of relaxation could be held at the half though, as Chancellor's No. 2 Laney Garrette, with the help of almost every other Charger on the field, pushed the ball past the Cyclones' goalie giving the Chargers a 1 - 0 lead.

On Eastern View's side, positive suggestions from their head coach on the sideline during halftime helped them get off to a hot start. Three and a half minutes into the second half, it was already a tie game. It would take another twenty minutes, but the Cyclones broke out and scored the final three goals of the game to storm to victory. They took advantage of a gassed Charger's defense, and it will be something for the Chargers to work on for later this week.

The Chargers next challenge will be on the road against King George on Thursday for their final game of September. The Cyclones next game will be against the same Chancellor Chargers next week back at home for a make-up game.

Notable Stats

  • Eastern View Time of Possession : 41 minutes 37 seconds
  • Chancellor Time of Possession : 8 minutes 23 seconds
  • 8 Shots On Goal by Eastern View
  • 3 Shots On Goal by Chancellor
  • 1 player on the Chargers and 1 player on the Cyclone both took hard hits from the ball, but both showed great strength in being able to get back up and walk to the bench on their own.

Varsity Volleyball : Courtland Cougars vs. Chancellor Chargers

Chargers Can't Contain Cougar's Energy

After watching the varsity field hockey team, junior varsity field hockey team, and the junior varsity team all fall to Courtland, the Varsity Volleyball team looked to try and end the day on a high note for Chancellor. The intensity of the game floated through the air for every match, but despite multiple strong showings like one from team captain Brittany Margelos, the Chargers just couldn't stop the Cougar's explosive front. Both sides gave it their all, and the rivalry game played true to its word. A beautiful rendition of the national anthem by Chargers Bella Conrad and Payton helped charge into the night the right way.

Match 1 started with a Chargers serve that seemed to go back and forth for eternity until Courtland struck first and rode on to an early 4-1 lead. The Chargers pushed back and took the lead briefly at 5-4, but after that Courtland really started to show their dominance on the court. Eventually winning the first set 25-15, Chancellor look surprised as an early lead they held seemed to have happened in a different world. With inconsistency haunting their first match, they plowed into match 2.
Match 2 started very slowly for the Chargers who started to get winded until a carefully planned timeout. No.11 Sydney Collins had an impressive spike coming out of the timeout which sparked a run of momentum for the Chargers who went from down 7-1, to only being down 9-8. Also No.7 Bella Conrad helped keep her teams spirits up with multiple diving plays to keep long rallies going. This match was played much more tightly until the end, but the Cougars held their ground and won match two at a final score of 25-20.

Match 3 was the decider for Chancellor as a victory looked far, far away. Their own ceiling seemed to be against them as well, as the ball bounced off the ceiling straight down and burned the Chargers twice. For the Chargers this night, the saying "When it rains, it pours," greatly applied. A winded Charger team could not keep up with the continuous assault from the Cougars as the Chargers fell quickly and lost Match 3 by a final score of 25-9. This ended the game as the Chargers were swept. Despite the tough round, No.11 Sydney Collins continued to have a good night with multiple assists and spikes.

The Chargers will regroup and try to bounce back on Thursday (September 22) as they head to James Monroe High School.

Varsity Field Hockey : Courtland Cougars vs. Chancellor Chargers

Chargers Offense Stalls as Cougars Play Aggressive

The Courtland Cougars visited the Chancellor Chargers varsity field hockey squad for a rivalry conference game. Throughout the majority of the game, the Cougars kept the ball on the Chancellor side forcing constant pressure and pushing Chancellor’s defense to the max. The score doesn’t accurately portray the intensity of the game though, as the game was held at Cougars 2 Chargers 0 for most of the game until the Charger’s defense ran out of gas in the end. AnnMarie Hoppel and Kelsey Jones both had a great game for the Cougars, both scoring two goals a piece. For the Chargers, their only goal came from Junior Megan Earnesty.

For the first half the Cougars pressed well, with No. 5 AnnMarie Hoppel and No.8 Kelsey Jones scoring their first of multiple goals in the game. Chancellor’s goalkeeper No. 26 Naiomi Nichols played a good game at the net with 19 saves, keeping the score as low as she could. In the final 10 minutes of the half, she recorded 3 saves to keep it close.

In the second half, things started out about even until the gas ran out of the Charger machine. As AnnMarie Hoppel and Kelsey Jones scored their second goals of the day within 1 minute of each other, the game slipped out of the Charger’s fingers. With 8:47 left in the game, Chancellor’s goalkeeper Naiomi Nichols made an incredible stop on a penalty shot which kept spirits alive. And, with No.11 Megan Earnesty’s goal with 42 seconds left in the game, it gave something for the Chargers to build on for their next match up.

After Chancellor’s first goal, one of Chancellor's team captains Lilly Church could be heard from the stands cheering on her teammates saying, “Still 42 seconds, we can pull it off c’mon girls!” Courtland was a tough opponent and it showed in the way they played and the Chargers should have nothing to hang their heads about. As the clock hit zero it was the Cougars on top with a final score of Courtland 5 - Chancellor 1

What ultimately in the end cost the Chargers a win was never being able to push the ball out of their own territory. The Cougars spent the last 10 minutes of the first half in Charger territory and never let up from there. In the game overall, they spent over 41 out of 60 minutes in Charger territory.

The Chancellor Chargers next challenge will come next Monday (September 26) as they play host to the Eastern View Cyclones.

Liberty Eagles vs. Chancellor Chargers

Chargers Rebound, Charge Over Eagles

After a tough, overtime loss to the Eastern View Cyclones a week ago, the Chancellor Chargers came into Friday night's game with their minds set on getting back in the win column. The Liberty Eagles, coming off of two consecutive losses, were looking to upset a powerful Chancellor team.

Early on in the first quarter, the Chargers forced a turnover on downs to grab the ball already half way towards their destination. And two plays later, it was C.J Washington with a 52 yard touchdown reception over the middle to spark the Charger's offense. Liberty responded with a much better drive without even passing the ball to tie it up at 7. After some good defense on both teams, Old Dominion commit E.J Jenkins broke the tie with an impressive catch in the end zone to erase the two dropped passes from earlier in the drive.

The defense continued to provide for the Chargers, forcing another turnover on downs which resulted in points for the Chargers. The Eagles defense and offense continued to struggle, as three and outs seemed common place for them throughout the night. E.J Jenkins scored another touchdown in the final seconds of the first half by stretching his arms into the end zone.

The Chargers started with the ball in the second half, and were quick at putting more points on the board as senior quarterback Jason Brown made a physical rushing touchdown to bring his total to 2 rushing touchdowns on the night. With a consistent running attack and impressive passing game led by Jason Brown and E.J Jenkins, the Chargers quickly put the game out of reach for the Eagles.

The Chargers ran the ball all the way into the red zone as the clock ticked down with some impressive runs. As the clock hit zero, though, it was Chancellor who more than came out on top with a final score of Chancellor Chargers 51, Liberty 14.

There were also many other Chargers who put up impressive numbers against Liberty. C.J Washington had a dominate night as both a receiver and a punt returner, racking up impressive yardage. Though Lovell Amstead did not have the flashy 200 yard night like weeks in the past, he still was impressive at breaking multiple tackles and picking up plenty of first downs. Daniel Ford, late in the fourth quarter, provided an incredible pick six just to add more padding to the Charger lead. Lastly, defensively the Charger defensive line had a great night sacking Liberty's quarterback on multiple occasions not letting any large passing plays ever develop.

Next week is the Chancellor Charger's (3 - 1) bye week, but the following week they travel to James River High School to take on the Rapids (2 - 1).The Liberty Eagles (0 - 3) will head back home to take on Kettle Run.
