Offense Goes Crazy In Chargers Big Conference Win

Varsity Boys Soccer: Eastern View Cyclones vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

The Chancellor Chargers (5-1) were back and in full force Thursday night, as they made their presence known in the conference with a resounding 7 - 0 victory over the Eastern View Cyclones.

Earlier on in the week, it was the Chargers who were jumped on with two early goals from their opponent that put them in a hole. Tonight, it was the Chargers who struck first and struck hard. Ruben Niamien got the Chargers started with a goal in the first 30 seconds of play, and it was his first of two goals on the day. Two minutes later, Eli Carr joined in on the fun and scored a goal of his own to give the Chargers an early 2-0 advantage.

The Cyclones managed to regroup and pull things together, to prevent the game from getting out of hand. The Chargers were almost playing flawless ball early, and it was almost impossible to defend right out of the gate.

With less than ten minutes left in the first half, the Chargers played add on. Andres Correa assisted Daniel Garcia for a goal into the top corner of the net. Then five minutes later, Niamien scored his second goal of the game and the half which doubled the Chargers earlier lead to 4-0. The Cyclones seemed gassed, and the Chargers weren't about to let off the gas pedal.

Coming out of the half, Chargers coach Mike Webb made sure his team kept their fiery intensity. Four minutes into the half, team captain Nico Vega replicated that intensity his coach wanted with a nifty goal where he was able to avoid a diving Cyclones goalie for an easy shot on the net.

The Chargers subbed in players, and many got some valuable playing time. With 18 minutes left to play, the Chargers scoring parade wasn't done yet. Kris Kokoneshi appeared to get the header in the goal which extended the lead and was his first goal of the year. And finally, with five minutes left, Angel Sierra-Hernandez finished off the Chargers scoring for the night with his goal.

In all, six different Chargers athletes scored goals tonight while their defense held the Cyclones to just a single shot on goal. It wasn't as active a night for Chargers goalkeeper Josh Reid, but his backfield support kept the Chargers defense focused.

This is a great win for the Chargers to open conference play for the year, and it also puts them at an early five win mark for the season. The season is bright, and it only looks to get better as they will host their rivals the Courtland Cougars next Friday.

Rough Game Slides Away From Chargers

Varsity Girls Soccer: Riverbend Bears vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

Wednesday night was one the Chancellor Chargers (1-2) will be wanting to forget. The Riverbend Bears put up goals early and often to run away with the game, forcing it to end early with a final score of 10-2.

About 15 minutes into the game, the Bears started to get their kicks in against a struggling Chargers defense. In less than a minute, the Bears put up two goals and already had the Chargers in a hole. And as the old saying goes, when it rains it pours.

After the Bears added two more onto their lead, Caedyn Berg broke the scoring drought for the Chargers that had dated all the way back to the previous week. Her goal gave the Chargers a fighting chance, but unfortunately the high-octane offense of the Bears proved to be too much.

The Chargers trailed 7-1 headed into the second half, and the game never really seemed to shift tides. The Bears grew their lead, and fought of Berg's second goal of the night, to force a shortened game. The Chargers, however, did move the ball better in the second half.

The Chargers next contest will be this Friday against the Eastern View Cyclones, marking their first conference game of the year. The Chargers will look to find a stride and build off of it, to start off well in games that are more meaningful towards the end-goal of the season.

Late Rally Not Enough As Chargers Drop Intense Matchup

Varsity Boys Soccer: Jamestown Eagles vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

Tuesday night started out as a hot one for the Jamestown Eagles, as their offense surged early and left the Chancellor Chargers (4-1) in a hole to dig out of. A late rally showed the team's true fighting potential, but in the end it wasn't enough as the Eagles pulled away with a 2-1 win.

The game had a crazy start for the Eagles, who took advantage of a Chargers' squad showed a new lineup due to some sickness in the team. Within the first 15 minutes of the game, the Eagles had a big 2-0 advantage that would prove to be a rough battle for the Chargers.

Both teams' goalkeepers were at work, as both pulled together multiple saves and kept the goals to a minimum. The Chargers' Josh Reid had a big night, as he had as many as three diving stops that prevented a tie or win from becoming unreachable.

Down by two at halftime, the Chargers still weren't discouraged. Chris Escobar and Nico Vega led the charge down the field and the Chargers finally started to dent the Eagles' defense. Offensively, the Eagles were getting less possession time and their control on the game started to hang in the balance.

With 9 minutes left to play, Eli Carr found himself in the corner and forced a desperation move by Eagles player David Stinson. His hand ball put one of the deadliest penalty kickers in Virginia at the line, and Ruben Niamien lived up to the hype. He knocked the ball into the left corner of the net, and suddenly the Chargers were back in it.

The offense perked up and things started to run in the usual, full gear. The ball was pushed down the field more often, and the Eagles were forced to play in desperation to keep the game from going into overtime. Sadly for the Chargers, the Eagles were able to accomplish their goal and end the game in regulation.

The Chargers still looked good on the awkward night, and this is just a bump in the road for a team that may find itself facing this same opponent later on in the season. Their focus for now will shift to Thursday where they will face the Eastern View Cyclones, who will be their first conference foe of the year.

Stalemate Leaves Both Teams Wishing For More

JV Boy's Soccer: Jamestown Eagles vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

The JV Chancellor Chargers (1 - 1 - 2) were seemingly dominant early, but were never able to find the net. The Jamestown Eagles were experiencing some of the same issues, as they rarely got a shot on goal until the final ten minutes of the game. The game ended in a tie at 0-0, as the Chargers continue to look for answers offensively.

Ups And Downs To Start The Spring Season

Chancellor Sports Recap: Softball, Baseball, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer

By: Greg Wolfe

(This Week's Photo Gallery) ←Click there to be taken to the gallery

This past week of Chancellor Charger sports featured many ups and and downs for the four teams playing. Overall, the Chargers went 5-3 and showed talent in the young season.

The Boys Soccer team started off the week strong at home, as they cruised over Stafford 5-0. Five different Chargers scored in the game, and the team barely allowed the Indians any shots on goal (Boys Recap). For the Girls Soccer team, their offense also exploded for 6 goals that helped them win on the road against Stonewall Jackson. Lydia Burke found the net two times, and her teammate Caedyn Berg followed along with the hat trick of three goals herself.

On a cold Wednesday, the Baseball and Softball teams went on the road to face Massaponax. The softball team started hot on the cool day, but were unable to hold on as Massaponax's pitching shined and kept the Chargers quiet until they could take the lead and seal up the game (Softball Recap). Over on the baseball field, Tyler Fisher and Matt Zuna led the Chargers to a win as they ran away early to secure an 11-6 win, their second of the season. The cold didn't scare either of the two teams to nice offensive days.

On Thursday Chancellor stayed at Massaponax, the Girls Soccer team stepped up to play and had a real tough night. The offense never really found their way, and they lost starting goalkeeper Lexi Lawson to a sprained wrist. The team was a little shell-shocked, but the veteran filled team should have no problem finding their footing and moving forward (Girls Recap).

Things would finally warm up on Friday for the Chargers, as the Softball and Boys Soccer teams went to work and pulled out two exciting victories. The Boys were on the road, showing off their new jerseys in pure style scoring four goals to soar past EC Glass. Back at home, the softball team had their home opener and there was plenty to cheer for. Kenzie Coates came up with a clutch triple late to score the eventual game winning run, as Haley McDaniel pitched a gem to keep visiting Mountain View quiet (Softball Recap).

To round off the week, the Chargers Softball team woke up early to go on the road and face a loaded Stafford squad. The Chargers were missing some starters, and the team ultimately lost by the slaughter rule. Taylor Sullivan proved to the Chargers however that she's a good back up for McDaniel who was hurt early and struggled late (Softball Recap).

Looking back at the week, several Charger athletes shined and it's hard to pick just a few to highlight. For Boys Soccer, Eli Carr shined this week with his two goals and battling back from injury to help the Chargers get the victory later that week. For Girls Soccer, Caedyn Berg's hat trick against Stonewall Jackson was the highlight of the week as those three goals were what ultimately what gave the Chargers the win.

For baseball, Tyler Fisher's big day at the plate against Massaponax that included two doubles and more were huge for the team that continues to prove it's terrifying presence at the plate that we expected to see going into this year. And lastly for softball, Haley McDaniel had the biggest week with her 6 hits that helped her own pitching performance. Then, on the mound, she pitched all but 3 of the Chargers' innings and would've pitched for all of them if not for a knee injury that she bravely battled through on Saturday.

Looking forward to next week, good luck Chargers!

Errors Spell Doom For Chargers

Varsity Softball: Chancellor Chargers vs. Stafford Indians

By: Greg Wolfe

The Chancellor Chargers (1-2) were faced with a tough turn-around game Saturday afternoon, as they struggled against the Stafford Indians. The Chargers were a bit understaffed and banged up, but still managed to stay in it for six innings against a loaded Indians squad for a 12-2 final score.

Both teams started the game off quietly offensively, as both teams pitchers seemed to be comfortable in the warm, welcoming spring weather. Haley McDaniel, the Chargers pitcher, was battling a banged up knee on her push off leg and started the game off very admirably.

The Chargers struck early again, as they have in all three of their games this year, with a booming double off the fence by McDaniel to score Taylor Sullivan and put the Chargers in a tie. The Indians didn't allow it to last long, as Number 2 singled her way on base early on, working around the bases to eventually be knocked in by Number 6 for the Indians, who provided hits at the bottom of the Indians' lineup all day.

In the third inning, the Indians started to get the machine going as they'd swiftly punch in three runs to gain the lead. The inning was starting to get out of hand for the Chargers, until a base running error by Number 2 for the Indians resulted in a runner's interference that halted the inning and kept it from getting too bad.

In the next inning, the Indians picked up the hot hitting once again, forcing the Chargers to pull a struggling McDaniel who had to limp off the field. She battled through pain, and the Chargers couldn't have asked for any more effort from her. The errors started to mount up however, and the Indians took advantage of them plating 4 more runs to add on their lead.

Replacement pitcher Taylor Sullivan pitched well for the Chargers and showed great control. She didn't strike out anybody, but that's not her game as the defense picked her up and the Chargers got some outs to keep some hope alive.

In the top of the 6th, the Chargers benefited off some walks from Indians' pitcher Number 7. She walked Samantha Tillman, who was able to run around the bases and eventually be hit in by Kenzie Coates. The Chargers had now put the score at 10-2.

In the next inning, the Indians' wasted no time getting on base, scoring, and ending the game. Four straight batters reached base, and Number 7 ended the game with an RBI from a ground ball out that would force the game into a slaughter rule ending.

The game didn't particularly end how the Chargers wanted it to, but there was still multiple learning moments and it was a great developmental week. Noelle Greenwood who was out of her usual position of centerfield and at third base today, was able to hold down the fort for her missing teammate and help keep things positive. The Chargers also learned they have a definite strike thrower in Sullivan who can back up McDaniel.

The Chargers will travel to Albermarle on Monday, and look to continue to build on this young season.

Home Opening Thriller Ends With Chargers Win

Varsity Softball: Mountain View Wildcats vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

The Chancellor Chargers (1-1) were able to overcome some adversity Friday afternoon for the home opener, as a late run proved the difference against the Mountain View Wildcats.

Similar to earlier in the week against Massaponax, the Chargers opened up the game with a strong offense as the top of their line up continued to shine. Haley McDaniel got things started quick, literally, as she dropped down a perfect bunt to get on base. She then stole second and third base, allowing Noelle Greenwood to collect her third RBI of the young season.

McDaniel then went on the mound to do some quick work, retiring the side swiftly with a strikeout thrown into the mix. The second inning was quiet for the Chargers, but the pace didn't slow down as McDaniel stayed hot on the mound and tossed another scoreless frame to keep the lead.

In the third inning the Chargers played add-on, as McDaniel found her way on again with a bunt and quickly found her way home after Greenwood absolutely rocked a ball into centerfield for a triple which was the team's first extra base hit of the year. Kate Schwinn followed in line, and knocked a solid double into left field to extend the Chargers lead to 3-0.

The scoring settled down again until the fifth, where some miscues came back to haunt the Chargers. Three errors in the fifth inning helped three Wildcats find their way home thanks to big hits from Numbers 4 and 14. This tied the game, and almost turned the tide like the Chargers had seen earlier in the week. McDaniel was able to shut it down however, and force the game to move on in a tie.

The Chargers would strike again in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Mackenzie Coates led off the inning with a triple into an outfield gap. Sarah Tiller was able to step up and complete the scoring play, plating Coates with a ground ball out to the second baseman.

McDaniel wasn't about to let a lead slip away again, and did what she does best which is produce outs. She retired three of the four batters in the top of the 7th, only failing to retire Number 14 who had the most impressive day at the plate going 3-3 with a walk and an RBI.

This was the first win in the Chargers young season, and they will be looking to carry this momentum into tomorrow (Saturday, March 25) where they will go on the road to face the Stafford Indians.

Rough Night Goes Wrong For Chargers

Varsity Girl's Soccer: Chancellor Chargers vs. Massaponax Panthers

By: Greg Wolfe

Nothing seemed to go right for the Chancellor Chargers (1-1-0) Thursday night, as the Massaponax Panthers rolled to a 8-0 slaughter rule victory. Tyria Smalls for the Panthers scored three goals, while her counterpart Caitlyn Kirtley scored two goals of her own as they lead the Panthers offense all night.

Early on, the Chargers seemed to be a bit sluggish. The Panthers were ahead of every pass and putting lots of early pressure on Senior Goalkeeper Lexi Lawson. Smalls was able to break open the scoring about ten minutes in, with her first goal of the night. The Chargers were never really able to cover, and struggled keeping possession.

The Panthers crowded the box later on in the first half, and Kirtley appeared to knock in her first goal of the night thanks to an interesting assist. Five minutes later, she was alone with the net and was able to knock in her second goal of the night allowing the Panthers to start slipping away.

The second half had the Chargers desperately looking for some offense early on, but their offensive fire was quickly doused and the Panthers took total control. The Panthers, to simply put it, were everywhere tonight. The Panthers were able to counter every move and their defense played extrodinarily well after suffering some injuries earlier on in the season.

With just under ten minutes to play, Amber Jacobs took a desperate shot from almost 40 yards away that found the back of the net and enacted the slaughter rule for the game. The Panthers, walked briskly away with a win leaving the Chargers with a bad taste in their mouth.

The Chargers get to come back home and host Riverbend for the "Route 3 Rivalry" next Wednesday, and that's more than enough time for the girls to find their mojo and get back on track against some familiar faces.

Offense Never Gets Going For Chargers

JV Girl's Soccer: Chancellor Chargers vs. Massaponax Panthers

By: Greg Wolfe

The JV Chancellor Chargers struggled to get anything offensively going Thursday night, as the Massaponax Panthers scored once in the first 5 minutes, and once in the last 5 minutes. M’kayla Ainsworth did manage to get 3 shots on goal against the Panthers, which is a bright spot for the young squad.

Chargers Unable To Stay Hot, Drop Season Opener

Varsity Softball: Chancellor Chargers vs. Massaponax Panthers

By: Greg Wolfe

The Chancellor Chargers (0-1) battled through a cold, windy game against the Massaponax Panthers (1-1) this Wednesday afternoon. Despite a hot offensive start, the Panthers were able to settle in and take control later on in the game with a 7-4 win.

To start the game, the heavy-hitting top of the lineup for the Chargers came out swinging and quickly put up a run thanks to an early RBI, 2-out single by Mackenzie Coates. The Chargers battled through two outs early, and were able to show great plate discipline early in the season.

In the bottom of the first, the Panthers answered right back after the Chargers' starter Haley McDaniel gave up back to back walks which would come back to haunt her. Number 3 for the Panthers was able to knock a single up the middle to score the run, but afterwards the Chargers quieted the Panthers quickly. After a pop up, McDaniel stole a line drive and threw it to first for the double play and ended the dangerous inning.

After retiring the first two batters of the next inning, the Panthers seemed to have found their groove until the Chargers again took advantage of some decent 2-out hits. With the bases loaded, Noelle Greenwood came through with a big single to left field that put two runs on the board and gave the lead back to the Chargers.

After the second inning, the Panthers decided to switch out their catcher which seemed to give their pitcher some comfort as she would go on to retire her next 14 consecutive batters, which gave the Panthers more than enough time to take the lead.

In the 4th inning, the Panthers broke through and scored two runs to grab a small advantage over the Chargers. The wind seemed to start blowing their way as the Panthers collected four hits, two of which were bloops that landed out of Sierra Gibson's reach in right field. The Panthers clean-up hitter, Number 12, hit a rocket to center field that made some eyes go wide, but Greenwood out in center field was able to coral it in and end the big inning.

The game stayed relatively quiet until the Panthers put up some insurance runs in the 6th inning, taking advantage of some Charger errors. They had two in the inning, which would be their only two of the day and it cost them.

Headed to the final frame, the Chargers looked to rally. And continuing on the hot trend of hitting with two outs, the Chargers put together a small rally led by McDaniel. Sarah Tiller was able to knock her first RBI of the year, but the Chargers would ultimately come up short.

It was a cold day, and big hits were hard to come by. The Chargers will look to rebound on a much warmer Friday evening this week, as they will have their home opener against the Mountain View Wildcats.

Chargers Offense Shines In Shutout Victory Over Indians

Varsity Men's Soccer: Stafford Indians vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

Tuesday night's match-up between the Chancellor Chargers (3-0) and the Stafford Indians (0-2) was full of offensive success for the Chargers who ran away with a 5 - 0 victory. The Chargers were also able to keep possession on their opponent's side of the field for a majority of the game, which played key into defusing any attempt the Indians had to score a goal.

Early in the game the ball was sent back and forth, as the teams' starters were fresh and battling for possession. The Chargers were able to fend off an early offensive spurt by the Indians, and it only took them 15 minutes into the game to break open with a goal from Eli Carr.

Carr missed his first shot on goal, with a shot that went too high off his knee and ended up out of bounds. Minutes later he was able to rebound with his second chance and punch it in for his first goal of the year. This goal early on would help spark the Chargers offense going into the night.

Andres Correa would add onto that score with his goal 8 minutes later, which featured him slipping through the Indians' defense for an open shot that he was able to knock into the net. This would be the final goal of the first half for the Chargers, but the ball never really made it back to their side as the offense kept the pressure on constantly. The Indians' goalkeeper Joey Wardlaw got his money's worth early on, with 8 saves in the first half.

Leading 2-0 going into the second half, nothing really changed for the Chargers. They kept playing their game, pushing the ball down the field making it an uphill battle for the Indians all night. The Indians only ever got one shot on goal the entire night, and the Chargers continued to bombard Wardlaw with shots.

With 37 minutes left in the game, Carr was left on the ground after an accident and was in some visible pain. His teammates banded together and carried him off the field to the bench in a heartwarming scene of comradery. Ruben Niamien would would open up the scoring for the Chargers in the second half 8 minutes later with a nifty assist from Correa that increased the lead to 3-0.

After a Chargers penalty kick, the Indians were able to rush down the ball down the field quickly and open up an opporutnity for Armando Mondragon to maybe break the ice and score. The Chargers Kwesi Abban had other plans however, and chased Mondragon down to prevent any attempt at a score.

To round off the night and get the Chargers to five points, Herson Benitez and Angel Sierra-Hernandez both scored goals late. Sierra-Hernandez's goal came from a penalty kick that ultimately ended the game and gave the Chargers the victory.

Chancellor will ride their win streak into Friday as they face EC Glass and look to continue improving and stay consistent.
