Chargers Stun Cavaliers On Senior Night

Varsity Women's Basketball: Caroline Cavaliers vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

The Chancellor Chargers (11-6) came into Tuesday night's conference match-up with the Caroline Cavaliers with some nerves as it was their last official home game with two seniors. After trailing for most of the game, the Chargers were able to shake it all away and come out on top after a spectacular final quarter. Thanks to four Chargers scoring double-digit-points, the Chargers were able to stun the Cavaliers in a 64-59 victory.

Before the game started, the Chargers honored their two seniors on the team Lexi Lawson and Lachaunda Patterson. Each got the start, and had their own good games to remember as their last official home game.

The beginning of the game was impressive as always for the Chargers, who put up four unanswered. Senior Lachaunda Patterson kicked off her Senior Night in fashion with a quick offensive rebound and two points that foretold her great game to come.

The Cavaliers would strike back quickly, as they usually do with their fast-paced offense, as Number 10 hit her first 5 FGs, which amounted to a quick 12 points in less than four minutes. The Chargers would fall behind, unable to respond the Cavaliers' consistent shooting and there was some worry looking at halftime.

Bianca Atkinson had other plans, however. With less than a minute remaining she stormed down the court and drained a quick "3" to pull the Chargers within striking distance just before the half. This did wonders for a winded team, that had been trailing by 7 and 9 points for most of the quarter and would now head into the halftime just down by 4.

The Cavaliers came back out on the court in the third quarter with the same fiery intensity that they had in the first half. Number 30 quickly grabbed an offensive rebound (one of 6 that night) and turned it into two points to make her presence known. The Chargers would answer, but would eventually slip behind again after being so close after missed opportunities.

Number 32 for the Cavaliers had herself a good start as well, after collecting 6 defensive rebounds in the first half she would collect 4 more in the second. She was a constant threat under the net while on defense, and was assist magnet to her teammates as she would rack up five total assists on the night.

The final quarter of the game was, to simply put it, insane. Both teams were within one point of each other for four total minutes of game time. They both were answering each other offensively and defensively, and the game was locked into a stand-still of held breath to see who would break first.

The Cavaliers broke first, and late. While still leading by 1 point, a bad pass off the foot of Number 30 gave the ball to the Chargers with a chance to take the lead and they cashed in with free throws. They struggled early in the game, but Patterson and Atkinson found their groove and smoothly put up point for the Chargers who were now in the lead.

Number 10 for the Cavaliers did all she could, but in the end it wouldn't be enough as the Chargers secured a lead after two missed free throws by Number 22. The crowd was fully into it, fully appreciating the girls' wills not to give up and to keep pushing for that lead no matter the defecit. Patterson had herself a night to remember and was a big part of the late comeback, as scored 12 and rebounded 4 to push her team over the top.

This is a huge win for the Chargers looking for a high seed in the playoffs, and the harsh road to the playoffs will continue with their second of three games in one week as they travel to Eastern View.

Chargers Can't Rebound Cavaliers Big Showing

JV Women's Basketball Capsule: Caroline Cavaliers vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

The Chancellor Chargers (8-7) were unable to slow down an offensive rebounding machine Tuesday night, as the Caroline Cavaliers rode 26 offensive rebounds to a big 43-25 win. The Chargers Number 15 had a big night with 15 points and 7 rebounds, but she was outmatched by the Cavaliers Numbers 50 and 30 who combined for 19 points and 26 rebounds.

Rough Shooting Night Curses Chargers

Varsity Men's Basketball: James Monroe Yellow Jackets vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Greg Wolfe

Friday night was a big chance for the Chancellor Chargers (8-8) to pick up some momentum going into a long week, but the James Monroe Yellow Jackets defense forced 16 Charger turnovers as they led the whole game and took a 68-63 victory.

The Yellow Jackets got off to a hot start, jumping to a 4-0 lead and never looking back as they kept the Chargers offense at bay for the rest of the game. The Chargers would fall behind late and regularly trail by double digits, and most of their big offensive plays were then erased by a fast-paced Yellow Jackets squad led by Number 2's 31 points.

Freshman Number 11 also had a big game to continue a hot season for the young player, as he was swiftly shooting three's early that left the Chargers trying to figure out how to contain the kid. He would eventually slow down, but the Chargers turnover problems spiked up and they were unable to cash in after the Yellow Jackets' own mistakes.

The second quarter was very quiet, with the Chargers defense standing strong and concealing the Yellow Jackets to just three Field Goals the entire quarter. Turnovers continued to hurt, though, and they weren't able to gain any true momentum until right before halftime. The Chargers knew they needed to keep things reasonable and did just that. E.J. Jenkins and Jason Brown found their pace and put up a quick combined 8 points to help keep the 'Jackets lead to only 10 points headed into halftime.

With Brown and Jenkins heading a majority of the scoring, the Chargers knew they had to get more people involved. Matt Byram, Josiah Jones, and Nassir Woody led that second half charge. The group combined for 22 points, and their consistency helped the Chargers start to try and climb up a huge mountain and try to squeak out a win.

The Yellow Jackets would have none of that though, as they aced the free throw line in the second half after a shaky first half, especially Number 2 and 11 who combined for 14/20 at the line. The Yellow Jackets were sending Chargers to the free throw line consistently as well, as the final quarter of the game turned into a free throw frenzy where the Chargers weren't able to keep up.

Trailing by 8 the Chargers needed a spark and Robbie Foster quickly found the ball in his hands beyond the arc. He tossed it up for a huge three that kept the Yellow Jackets on their toes. That would be the last big play of the night however, as the Chargers went quiet and ultimately were unable to climb the slippery slope they had found themselves in.

It's a tough loss, but with 3 games next week (all against Conference 19 opponents) it is an easy loss to get by in preparation for the fast approaching playoffs. Next Tuesday they will face off with the Caroline Cavaliers and try to get back on track.

It’s About How You End A Game That Matters

JV Men's Basketball: James Monroe Yellow Jackets vs. Chancellor Chargers

By: Christelle Temple

A game filled with lots of energy and emotion from both teams, the Chancellor Chargers (8-7) and James Monroe Yellow Jackets! Apparent rivals showed their skills as the game constantly went back and forth with points from both teams. January 27, Friday night at 5:30 was the beginning of the JV boys basketball game. It was an excellent game that made you want to stay and watch.

The Yellow Jackets started off strong with a consistent scoring of 2 point shots coming from an abundance of different players. This showed that everyone on the Yellow Jackets definitely brought their "A" game! But the Chargers were not going to back down, tied up with the Yellow Jackets throughout the first quarter. But #10 from the Yellow Jackets made sure he kept The Chargers behind them with 6 points in the quarter. Making the score of quarter one, Chargers 11 and the Yellow Jackets 15.

Quarter two started off with an amazing play by #00, on the Chargers, when he stole the ball from the opposite team taking it all the way down the court with no one around him making an impressive lay up. The points were going very back and forth with Chargers scoring then Yellow Jackets then the Chargers. You seemed to have your neck on a swivel the whole quarter. At the end of quarter two, #11 scored the first three pointer of the game leaving the score Chargers 22, Yellow Jackets 21.

The Chargers came back strong with not one, not two, but three 3 pointers from #5 scoring one and #11 making two. Yellow Jackets maintained great defense minimizing the amount of points the Chargers could have taken. #10 from the Yellow Jackets showed a lot of power pushing through the Chargers defense in quarter three and scoring a couple 2 point shots. Two people definitely worth mentioning in quarter three are #10 and #11 being a tremendous team. These two players from The Chancellor Chargers show great teamwork and coordination as they constantly help each other through every play they make. Ending the quarter with the score Chargers 37, Yellow Jackets 30.

Five seconds in and your eyes can barely keep up with #11 from the Chargers. A player from the Yellow Jackets starts off the final quarter throwing the ball to his team mate. But #11, from the Chargers, quickly blocks and steals the ball mid-throw moves as fast a lightning to the net and makes a quick lay up scoring the first two points of the quarter. That puts a lot of confidence in the Chargers team getting them all pumped up and playing their best in the last quarter. The Chargers are now showing absolutely no mercy for the Yellow Jackets. Leaving the last quarter of the game Chargers 53 and Yellow Jackets 38.

Overall it was a great game. Showing that no matter how the game starts it about how you finish it that counts. This was the second win for the Chargers against the Yellow Jackets this year as they sweeped the season series. But The Chargers had a phenomenal game with #11 being the star player scoring 24 points and having 2 assists. Making him 8 for 17 total on the night. Great job to both teams!

Chargers Shoot To Swift and Sweet Victory Over Cougars

Varsity Women's Basketball: Courtland Cougars vs. Chancellor Chargers

Tuesday night featured a rematch between the Chancellor Chargers (10 - 6) and Courtland Cougars (11 - 5), where earlier in the year the Chargers lost a heart breaker on the road. This time around on their own turf however, the Chargers rode a huge performance by Jasmine Talley (19 Points) and Sydney Collins (who had a double-double) to an absolute rout of the Cougars in a final score of 50-21.

The Chargers started off the game red hot shooting, hitting their first four attempted shots and quickly jumping out to a lead thanks to rebounds and layups from Collins. Bianca Atkinson held the pace in her hands, with two early assists that helped her team jump to the lead. The Cougars only led once in this game, after an early 3-Pointer by Number 30 dropped in to give them a 1 point lead. After that, it was all Chargers.

Kayla Syrkes found herself under the net often, and after a rough start she was able to pull it together and pump out points and rebounds for the Chargers. Rebounds were the key all night, with Free Throws burning the Cougars. The Chargers hit their first nine free throw attempts easily, killing the Cougars who would eventually only shoot 1/10 (10%) the entire night at the free throw line.

The Chargers did have some foul troubles, but it wouldn't turn to bite them too hard as their lead continued to grow after continuous successful possessions with the ball. Ryann Banks also had a nice first half despite three fouls, collecting 4 points and 3 rebounds. Going into halftime, the Chargers were erasing all thoughts of the previous match-up with a mountainous 31-17 lead.

In the next half, the Chargers didn't miss a beat. Isis Moore, who started the game cold, got hot shooting the ball and hit all 4 of her field goal attempts in the second half to grow a measurable point total of 9 on the night, just short of double digits. Talley also began to heat up, draining 2 of her 3 Three-Pointers on the night in the second half which contributed to her big scoring night.

The Cougars would continue their struggles, not hitting a single successful three in the entire 3rd Quarter. Turnovers and missed opportunities were the final nail in the coffin for them, as the Chargers spent most of the final quarter of the game passing the ball around to bleed the clock.

In the final seconds, Talley tried to break 20 points but missed a lay up that would've also given the Chargers their biggest lead of the night. It was no problem at all though, as it was already a definite win for the Chargers who kept the ball out of the Cougars hands for as long as they could. As the Cougars let the clock tick down to end the game, it was the Chargers on their home court who got revenge and slaughtered the Cougars in a 50-21 win. Their next challenge will come Friday night, as they look to sweep the season series against James Monroe.

Chargers Defense Stalls Cougars En Route To Big Win

JV Women's Basketball Capsule: Courtland Cougars vs. Chancellor Chargers

Tuesday’s match-up featured a Chancellor Chargers (8 - 6) squad that showed more dominance as a very young team, forcing 33 turnovers by the Courtland Cougars who were left befuddled for most of the night shooting-wise. The Chargers’ Number 21 had a big night with 9 points and 5 rebounds, which helped her team cruise to an easy 26-11 win. The Chargers point total, also was interestingly smaller than their rebound total for the night!

Controversy Plagues Chargers In Eagles Rematch

Varsity Men's Basketball: Colonial Forge Eagles vs. Chancellor Chargers

In a rare Saturday night match-up, the Chancellor Chargers (7 - 7) and Colonial Forge Eagles played a high-intensity game that felt like a rivalry. Controversial calls kept the packed stands loud, as the Eagles were able to comeback and beat the Chargers 61-53 after trailing the previous three quarters.

The game was very monotonous to begin with, as both teams struggled with shooting and possession, but Jason Brown was able to get off to a hot-start to build off of the previous night's performance. He quickly put up 9 first half points, each one coming in different fashion whether it be behind the back or looking the other way.

The Eagles were able to keep on pace however, with numerous rebounds that would eventually mount up to 14 total in the first half. Most notably was Number 24, who collected 6 in the first half. Turnovers hurt the Eagles, as traveling became their Achilles heel early on. They burned multiple chances to cut into the Chargers' lead, but the Chargers worked well off of turnovers early on.

E.J. Jenkins had a slow start, even though he still collected 8 first half points, which hurt the Chargers. After scoring the game's first bucket, he was rarely seen around the net with the ball but he still made the best out of the chances he got. He didn't get any electrifying slam dunks, but the crowd still cheered on his ferocious play that collected 3 blocks early on.

The half was coming to a close as the Chargers were trying to maintain a lead into the half, and Matt Byram knew that full well as he nailed a late 3-Pointer that had the crowd roaring. At the free throw line, Michael Bush and Brown worked well getting the Chargers some more points off of Eagles' mistakes. At halftime, it was the Chargers leading 24-17.

To start things off in the second half, it was a completely new ballgame. The Eagles shrugged off a sluggish first half with early made baskets from Number 0 who was on fire for the rest of the night. Jenkins also caught on fire both offensively and defensively, and both teams' offensive machines were in full gear.

The Eagles took better care of the ball more in the second half, and that would lead to improving their shooting consistency as they were able to continue cutting at the Chargers' lead until it was tied. The fouls mounted up for the Eagles though, and multiple players had to be limited in order to preserve them for the anticipated close late game action.

Going into the final quarter tied, the crowd got vicious. Some controversial calls fueled an upset Chargers' fan base and coaching staff, who knew their biggest goal coming into the game was to win the final quarter. Frustration took over, and the Eagles benefited to grab and hold onto a lead that at its biggest was 10 points about half way through.

The Chargers weren't done yet, though. Brown, Byram, and Josiah Jones all started collecting points for the team to pull their team back into the game. Jenkins was a monster under the net, and if not for some iffy calls, he would've been perfect.

The Eagles would silence the comeback however, with their biggest three-point-shooting quarter of the night where they successfully hit 3 of them and started to coast. Frustrated, the Chargers dropped the highly anticipated rematch and would walk into the locker room without a win they had been wanting since December. It's nothing to fear however, as the team did look competitive in the final quarter which is good news for the team as they hit the final stretch of the schedule.

Nest Tuesday's game at rivals Courtland will be a huge test, as they look to continue their impressive season.

Number 11's Big Game Helps Chargers Upset Eagles

JV Men's Basketball: Colonial Forge Eagles vs. Chancellor Chargers

Saturday night’s rare matchup between the Chancellor Chargers (7 - 7) and Colonial Forge Eagles became a revenge game for the Chargers’ Number 11 who went off for 28 points, 3 Assists, and 3 Rebounds. Despite big performances from Number 32 (12 Points) and Number 24 (13 Points) for the Eagles, the Chargers kept the ball in their possession with consistency and stayed away from foul trouble to complete a 45-41 upset victory.

Chargers Shower Knights With Threes To Big Win

Varsity Women's Basketball: Spotsylvania Knights vs. Chancellor Chargers

Friday night's match-up showed a Chancellor Chargers (9-6) squad that had shaken off its shooting woes from earlier in the week. The Spotsylvania Knights were overwhelmed by a dominant defense, and thanks to 19 points from the Chargers' Bianca Atkinson, they were able to cruise to a swift 59-28 victory.

The Chargers got off to their usual lightning-hot start, with two straight 3-Pointers from Atkinson that helped the Chargers gain some consistency. Sydney Collins also improved on her impressive season with early blocks and successful shots, that quickly swayed the lead to a Chargers favor. Number 12 for the Knights started her team off well with an early three pointer of her own, which helped keep some hope on her team's sideline.

Throughout the half though, despite some foul troubles, the Chargers were able to maintain an average 19 point lead that discouraged a turnover heavy Knights' squad. Jasmine Talley also had a great first half, with her passing around the arc to teammates Atkinson and Lachaunda Patterson that helped keep the Knights off balance and also bleed some clock time. By the end of the half, it was all Chargers with a mountainous 36-17 lead.

To lead off the second half, it took the two teams 4 minutes and 30 seconds before the first basket was made and points were put on the board. This put a major dent in the Knights' comeback plan, as time just seemed to melt away as both teams turned the ball over and struggled shooting. After the Knights broke the ice however, the scoring heated back up again but mostly for the Chargers who took the momentum and ran with it.

The Chargers would continue to build and build on their lead, until it hit a high at 33 points, where it seemed to stay for the rest of the game as slaughter rule was implemented and the clock didn't stop. The Chargers played keep away, and threw some more successful threes, en route to a big win that will help propel their offense into the latter-half of the season. The team's 37 rebounds are a good sign of dominance under the net, and Collins will lead that charge. Tonight it was a 59-28 lead, and now the Chargers' attention will turn to rivals Courtland who will come to their home turf for a rematch that the Chargers dropped earlier in the year.

Chargers Cruise Over Knights

JV Women's Basketball Capsule: Spotsylvania Knights vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers (7 - 6) kept the visiting Spotsylvania Knights in check offensively, only allowing a 13% of the Knights’ shots to drop in successfully. Chargers Number 15 had a night, with her 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist that helped lead the team. Early on the Chargers were able to keep turnovers to a minimum, which would ultimately help them ease on to a 33-14 win.

Shooting Problems Plague Chargers In Overtime Loss To Foxes

Varsity Women's Basketball: King George Foxes vs. Chancellor Chargers

Tuesday night's match-up between the Chancellor Chargers and King George Foxes wasn't a game for fans of shooting. Both teams failed to get above 30% FG shooting, but the Foxes were able to ride off big performances from Number 32 and Number 21, who combined for 19 of the game's points. In an overtime thriller, the Foxes pulled away and shut out the Chargers in the last quarter of play with a 39-34 victory.

Early on the Chargers would come out hot as fire, as they quickly put up seven unanswered points thanks to Sydney Collins and Kayla Syrkes who found the ball three times under the net and cashed it in for points. The Foxes would stall the Chargers' offense after that though, and for the remaining three minutes only allowed 3 points while playing catch-up. Turnovers became costly, as the Foxes and Chargers both traded them often but the Foxes cashed in more often to make the game score close at 10-7.

Both teams saw struggles with shooting going into the second quarter. With only three total field goals, most points came from free throws as the penalties stacked up on both sides. Two Chargers sat with three penalties, and on Fox sat with the same. Thanks to some good free throws by Bianca Atkinson, the Chargers would be able to stay in control at halftime with a 16-14 lead.

Coming out of the half, nothing seemed to change for the two teams. The Chargers struggled with shooting consistency and the Foxes had to rely on Number 21's four steals that were turned into points. Atkinson continued her impressive free shooting, and both teams started to get physical and fouls became problems for multiple players. After three quarters of play though, the Chargers still desperately clung to a 27-25 lead.

Despite eight different Chargers accounting for points at this point in the game, the score told a different story. The teams were in a dead-locked rebound battle as the Foxes struggled for a tie and the Chargers just tried to stay alive. The Foxes would eventually get what they wanted, after a late travelling penalty put the ball back in their hands with a chance to tie, and Number 32 did just that for them. With a locked score of 33-33, both teams headed into Overtime thirsty for a win.

The final quarter of play had to be highlighted by the Foxes' Number 10, who had struggled all night and put it all in the past as she nailed four straight free throws to give the Foxes a comfortable lead and an eventual win. The Chargers' lost their best free throw shooter Atkinson with a minute remaining, and that spelled doom as they failed to score for the rest of Overtime. The Foxes were able to walk away with a 39-34 victory that's bound to result in a future bitter game.

Chargers Can't Match Foxes' Intensity

JV Women's Basketball: King George Foxes vs. Chancellor Chargers

Tuesday night’s match-up showed the Chancellor Chargers (6-6) trying to work on turnover problems that had plagued them in the past. With 31 turnovers and 12 fouls, the lady Chargers failed to do that against a Foxes team that shot for 25% (13/51) and kept the Chargers to a limited score and ball possession. When all was said and done, the Chargers faced a tough, 32-12 loss that hosted their biggest deficit of the season (20). The Chargers’ No. 30 did see some success however, with a 2/3 FG% on the night, along with 3 rebounds and 1 assist.

Swimming Chargers Crush Cavaliers

Varsity Swimming: Chancellor Chargers vs. Caroline Cavaliers

*-All times are not official, and are times that I recorded.

The men benefited from big performances from Dylan Peck and Brandon Bolick, who swam their way to a combined four first place finishes and great relay times that helped with a 80-42 win. On the women's side, Abigail Cook and Sierra Gibson scored high and swam intensely against each other, to help their side of the team to an uncontested 113-18 win.
The Chargers get ready to race.
The night started of with the 200 Medley Relay, swam by boys Brandon Bolick, Dylan Peck, Ryan Hudak, and David Hinegardner. In the lane nearby the girls competed with Abby Cook, Brooke Similia, Jordan Shearer, and Sierra Gibson. Both teams cruised to first place finishes, the girls uncontested and the boys winning by 28 seconds. Next at the 200 Freestyle, Brandon Bolick swam uncontested with a quick 2:23 final time. Erin Lipkin and Lily Zeets raced nearby against a lone Cavalier, with Lipkin coming out on top dominantly with a 26 seconds win.

With the 200 IM, the men Chargers saw their only race without a first place finish, while the girls Jordan Shearer swam uncontested to an easy 6 points. Still leading 24-10, the men Chargers dominated the 50 Freestyle race with 3 place finishes, and a first place finish by Tyler Young at 26 seconds. The girls also dominated with 4 place finishes, and a first place finish by Katie Hinegardner just barely beating her teammate Sierra Gibson by 1 second.

The Chargers cheer on, and confuse their swimmers
to an extra 50 meters!
The 100 Fly hosted a close first place win by Dylan Peck, who beat the Cavalier opponent by just 3 seconds. Meanwhile, Jordan Shearer collected another first place finish with a 1:01 time, increasng the Chargers lead to 43-6. The 100 Free was next, the most popular race, and the Cavaliers found their way with 3 finishing placements. The Chargers' Brandon Bolick still collected the first place finish for the Chargers however, which helped keep a 50-26 strong lead. On the girls side, the second heat dominated as Megan Mesick grabbed a first place finish and the lady Chargers took the first four finishes overall.

Teammates Abigail Cook and David Hinegardner swam against each other in the 500 Free race, both being uncontested winners but Abigail finished first with a strong 6:37 time. The 200 Free Relay was next, and the men Chargers smoked the Cavaliers, winning by 2 minutes and 18 seconds led by a consistent time that averaged around 22 seconds for all four Charger swimmers. The women similarly dominated, filling the top two spots and the relay team of Abigail Cook, Sierra Gibson, Jordan Shearer, and Brooke Similia took the top position with a time of 1 minute and 50 seconds. The closest Cavalier relay team was 36 seconds away.

Halfway through the final relay of the night!
In the 100 Back race, Dylan Peck grabbed a first place finish against a tough Cavalier opponent. It wouldn't look that way however, as Dylan recorded a 1 minute time, beating his opponent by 13 seconds and finished seemingly all by himself. For the women, the Chargers took the top four spots again growing their lead to an unreachable 101-16. In the final race which the boys didn't swim in, the 400 Free Relay, the Chargers swept the competition away led by a team consisting of Caeley Short, Megan Mesick, Cora Kuschel, and Erin Lipkin who fought from behind to the last first place finish of the night.

Great night, Chargers!

JV Sweeps James Monroe On Rare Dual Home Game

JV Boys & Girls Basketball: James Monroe Yellow Jackets vs. Chancellor Chargers

Girls Roundup

The Chargers (6-3) started hot and stayed that way en route to squishing the Yellow Jackets and holding them only to 15% Field Goal Shooting. Number 15 led the way with her 12 points, supported by a Chargers squad that collected 27 rebounds and kept the 'Jackets on the defensive. They overcame 28 turnovers to open up the JV night with a silencing 33-17 win that mimicked the domination of their Varsity team the night before.

Boys Roundup

The Boys Chargers (3-5) followed the Girls' lead, with a hot start and an early ten point lead that flattened the 'Jackets defense early on. Despite an outstanding 29 point performance by the 'Jackets Number 11, the Chargers responded with three players in double digit points (Numbers 5, 4, and 11). The Chargers Number 11 was the spark of the night, with four 3-Pointers and an unbelievable 8/8 at the free throw line. A high scoring affair that tightened up late and turned into back and forth lead changes would fall in the Chargers hands in the final seconds, as they outlasted the 'Jackets to a 58-57 win. This win, similar to their girl counterparts, mimicked the Varsity Men's team that won in close fashion the night before.

Chargers Place Second In Senior Night Quad-Meet

Varsity Wrestling: Chancellor Chargers, King George Foxes, Courtland Cougars, and Caroline Cavaliers

Wednesday night’s match-up between four different high schools wound up being a victory filled night for the Chancellor Chargers despite a slow start. The Chargers honored five Seniors as a part of their annual senior night, who all would go on to have great nights. A picture album will be uploaded Friday afternoon (1/13) that will have pictures of all the wrestlers who participated!

Steven Myers, at 120 pounds, is a first-year starter for the Chargers and has seen success all year. Joey Nigro, at 132 pounds, holds and impressive career stat line of 149 pins. Hunter Rankin, at 138 pounds, qualified for the state competition the year before. Caleb Pitts, at 152 pounds, boats a four year veteran status for the Chargers and has also seen great success. Lastly, at 195 pounds, was Steven Brown who holds a Charger career winning record.

The Chargers night would start off a bit slow, as they opened up the night against the King George Foxes. The first Charger wrestler showed great defense and pulled out multiple escape points that gave him a comfortable 6-0 lead headed into the final period until a late pin would give the Foxes the first win of the night. Seniors Myers and Nigro would then follow the same fate, with Myers getting pinned in the first period of his match and Nigro being pinned in the second period of his.

Senior Rankin would change the pace a bit however, as he fought his opponent tough keeping the match close until he ultimately fell losing the match 13-8. The Charger to follow would build off that battle and get a pin to secure the Chargers first victory of the night Senior Pitts would show the same endurance in his match, surviving until late third period with multiple bridges. There were some signs of injury in the third period however, as he was pinned late and would go back to the bench with visible discomfort.

The next two Chargers would be pinned, ultimately sealing the Chargers fate. After Senior Brown’s long and enduring match that ended in the Foxes’ favor, the Chargers dropped their first set of the night 10-1.

Going into their second set of the night against the Caroline Cavaliers, the Chargers came out of the gate swinging. Myers would start hot in the first match, quickly pinning his opponent in the second period. Nigro followed pace, pinning his opponent in under two minutes to get the Chargers on a streak. The next two Chargers would pin their opponents and it felt like all Chargers. Pitts came back to wrestle again after an uncomfortable first set, getting to a hot a start and outlasting his opponent.

After a trading of pins that broke the Chargers’ hot streak, the Chargers would finish out the set with another two pins to secure a victory. The Chargers would even their win-loss record at 1-1, with a 8-5 set victory (With 4 Chargers forfeits for not having wrestlers in Caroline’s weight classes).

Chargers Drop Rivalry Late Against Cougars

Varsity Men's Basketball: Courtland Cougars vs. Chancellor Chargers

Friday night's match-up between the Chancellor Chargers and Courtland Cougars was definitely a tale of two halves. The Chargers soared early with big performances from Seniors E.J. Jenkins and Jason Brown, but would fall late due to turnovers and fouls.

Early on, the Chargers showed true dominance with efficient shooting and strong defense that would limit the Cougars. The Chargers led for almost all of the first half, and benefited from some great 3-Point shooting by Josiah Jones and Robbie Foster. Also, Brown and Yetur Matos showed some style in the first quarter as Brown threw a marvelous pass to Matos that set up an easy two points. After one bumpy and physical quarter, the Chargers trailed by a small margin of 14-13.

The Chargers would start off the second quarter with nine unanswered points. Two of those points came in dominating fashion, as Brown collected another incredible assist with a toss up to the board that Jenkins would hop into the air and collect in time to bring it down on the hoop and slam in two points. The points started pouring for the Chargers and they had their best shooting quarter. If not for Courtland's Number 50, the Cougars would've been lost as No. 50 scored all of their field goals in that quarter with four. The Chargers' lead was still prominent however, as they led 35-28 going into halftime.

Early on after halftime the Chargers started off hot, growing a game-best lead to 13 points and showing some shooting consistency. It wouldn't last for too long though, as struggles from their previous game appeared. Turnovers and fouls became aplenty and the Chargers lead would shrink. The Cougars' Number 12 recovered from a rough first half, and scored eight points in the quarter. Afterwards the Chargers felt winded, now only leading 48-46.

The second half struggles would continue for the Chargers going into the fourth quarter, as the Cougars grabbed a lead early and held onto it. Shooting for both teams became a problem at points, as both teams struggled to convert turnovers into points and found most of their scoring on free throws. Most notably of all had to be Brown, who recovered from an 1-5 free throw line from Wednesday night to put up a 10-12 free throw line. He would eventually be responsible for 26 of the Chargers points leading all scorers by far. In the end though it would be the Cougars who played tough and held onto their lead for a 65-60 victory.

The Chargers' next test will be on the road against the James Monroe Yellow Jackets, as they look to get their first win of 2017.

Never Fear Chancellor Chargers Are Here!

JV Men's Basketball: Courtland Cougars vs. Chancellor Chargers

Courtland Cougars and Chancellor Chargers, “rivalry madness” as some people call it. It was a grueling game at the beginning with the first half not looking so hot for Chancellor. But in the second half the Chargers came out and started causing a lot of tension!

In the first quarter the Cougars were making a lot of really nice layups. Chancellor was weakened because of all the fouls they made. What had the Chargers frustrated is their fouls were right before they made a hoop. That had all the Changer fans scared too. There were great blocks by both teams though, when the ball was so close the the hoop. Cougars Number 40 made an impressive block while Number 00 on the Chancellor team was trying for a 3pt shot. But Chancellor’s Number 00 came back strong with an amazing block right next  to the hoop when Number 23 was hoping to score later on. Final score after quarter one was Chancellor 9, Cougars 14.

Coming fast across the court number 11, on Chancellor, broke some ankles trying to make the first point of quarter two. But Number 44 stole the ball and made a 2pt shot right after. The quarter was slow with not a lot of action from both teams. But a lot of different Cougar players making 3pt shot left the score 17-27 at halftime.

Number 4 on Chancellor was definitely the "M.V.P." of quarter three. Not making one but two three point shots while being pushed from the Cougars players. Then making another layup while being flung out of the court! After all three fouls from the Cougars he's made every free throw! Bringing the Chargers in the lead by the end of quarter three.

In the last quarter the Chargers definitely showed their fans they have nothing to worry about. Showing no mercy the Chargers took the quarter with amazing block and rebounds from Number 00 and Number 10 making most of the shots. Ending the game with the final score of 59-44.

It was a great game to watch for both teams. Showing strengths and weaknesses from both teams. The teams definitely showed a lot of emotion on the court. Which can benefit the team or put the team at a disadvantage. Excited for the next game to see if the Courtland Cougars will get revenge and redemption!

Chargers Recover, But Ultimately Fall In Tough Loss To Wildcats

Varsity Men's Basketball: Chancellor Chargers vs. Mountain View Wildcats

Wednesday night's 2017 opener for the Chancellor Chargers (3 - 5) definitely had its' ups and downs as the Mountain View Wildcats (5 - 8) were able to hold on a squeak out a 50-47 win.

The Chargers were coached by Assistant Robert Matos, who did great in his first head coaching chance of the year, keeping the Chargers level headed in a game against a hot opponent. The first quarter came off a bit flat for both teams, especially for the Chargers who were knocking off some Winter Break rust. Senior E.J. Jenkins had no problem however, as he quickly kept the Chargers in the game with 4 rebounds and 6 first quarter points.

The first quarter was highlighted by some fancy shooting by the Chargers, as Senior Jason Brown lead the scoring off 1 minute and 24 seconds into the game which was a key after the dreadfully slow start against Massaponax in their last game. Senior C.J. Washington would have his hand in things as well, as he tossed an incredible pass to Jenkins who was able to lay it up for points and start his hot night. Jenkins had another highlight when he blocked a shot, took the ball and was all alone with the net allowing him to slam the ball in for two points and shush the home crowd.

Trailing the Wildcats 11-15 going into the second quarter, the Chargers forced 4 Wildcat turnovers to forcing the game to stay close. Like Brown did in the first quarter, he started the Chargers off scoring in the second with a mind boggling shot that seemed to come from behind his back and into the net. The Chargers would trail the entire half, but Josiah Jones kept them within a point after his late, clutch three-point field goal. This would energize the Chargers, as they would head to the locker room only trailing by one despite some turnover problems.

The third quarter was all recovery for the Chargers, who started scoring like a machine continuously putting out points. Jenkins stayed hot, and Washington added his own successful three-pointer to the mix to give the Chargers confidence. Outscoring the Wildcats 19-9, the Chargers had fully recovered and held on to the ball more to create their largest lead of the night, 40-31.

Halfway through the fourth quarter however, the Chargers lead had dissolved to just one point after 5 consecutive turnovers that allowed the Wildcats to go on a run and eventually pull the game into a tie. The struggles on ball control continued and the Wildcats gained a six point lead leaving the Chargers breathless.

That was, until Jones knocked in his third three-pointer of the night to pull the Chargers closer. They would get the ball back and Matt Byram took a terrifying shot that found its' way through the net and good for three points to tie the game. Byram's shot would prove not to be enough to elongate the game however, as the Wildcats' Number 11 had the ball in his hands as the team's hottest shooter and the game on the line. He would hit the clutch shot, ultimately sealing the win for the Wildcats.

It's a tough pill to swallow for the Chargers, but they have much to keep their head hung high about as they showed resilience and an ability to potentially beat a very well-built team. Their next test will be Friday night, as they play host to their rivals the Courtland Cougars and hope to break a 3 game losing skid.
