Controversy Plagues Chargers In Eagles Rematch

Varsity Men's Basketball: Colonial Forge Eagles vs. Chancellor Chargers

In a rare Saturday night match-up, the Chancellor Chargers (7 - 7) and Colonial Forge Eagles played a high-intensity game that felt like a rivalry. Controversial calls kept the packed stands loud, as the Eagles were able to comeback and beat the Chargers 61-53 after trailing the previous three quarters.

The game was very monotonous to begin with, as both teams struggled with shooting and possession, but Jason Brown was able to get off to a hot-start to build off of the previous night's performance. He quickly put up 9 first half points, each one coming in different fashion whether it be behind the back or looking the other way.

The Eagles were able to keep on pace however, with numerous rebounds that would eventually mount up to 14 total in the first half. Most notably was Number 24, who collected 6 in the first half. Turnovers hurt the Eagles, as traveling became their Achilles heel early on. They burned multiple chances to cut into the Chargers' lead, but the Chargers worked well off of turnovers early on.

E.J. Jenkins had a slow start, even though he still collected 8 first half points, which hurt the Chargers. After scoring the game's first bucket, he was rarely seen around the net with the ball but he still made the best out of the chances he got. He didn't get any electrifying slam dunks, but the crowd still cheered on his ferocious play that collected 3 blocks early on.

The half was coming to a close as the Chargers were trying to maintain a lead into the half, and Matt Byram knew that full well as he nailed a late 3-Pointer that had the crowd roaring. At the free throw line, Michael Bush and Brown worked well getting the Chargers some more points off of Eagles' mistakes. At halftime, it was the Chargers leading 24-17.

To start things off in the second half, it was a completely new ballgame. The Eagles shrugged off a sluggish first half with early made baskets from Number 0 who was on fire for the rest of the night. Jenkins also caught on fire both offensively and defensively, and both teams' offensive machines were in full gear.

The Eagles took better care of the ball more in the second half, and that would lead to improving their shooting consistency as they were able to continue cutting at the Chargers' lead until it was tied. The fouls mounted up for the Eagles though, and multiple players had to be limited in order to preserve them for the anticipated close late game action.

Going into the final quarter tied, the crowd got vicious. Some controversial calls fueled an upset Chargers' fan base and coaching staff, who knew their biggest goal coming into the game was to win the final quarter. Frustration took over, and the Eagles benefited to grab and hold onto a lead that at its biggest was 10 points about half way through.

The Chargers weren't done yet, though. Brown, Byram, and Josiah Jones all started collecting points for the team to pull their team back into the game. Jenkins was a monster under the net, and if not for some iffy calls, he would've been perfect.

The Eagles would silence the comeback however, with their biggest three-point-shooting quarter of the night where they successfully hit 3 of them and started to coast. Frustrated, the Chargers dropped the highly anticipated rematch and would walk into the locker room without a win they had been wanting since December. It's nothing to fear however, as the team did look competitive in the final quarter which is good news for the team as they hit the final stretch of the schedule.

Nest Tuesday's game at rivals Courtland will be a huge test, as they look to continue their impressive season.
