Varsity Women's Basketball: Courtland Cougars vs. Chancellor Chargers
Tuesday night featured a rematch between the Chancellor Chargers (10 - 6) and Courtland Cougars (11 - 5), where earlier in the year the Chargers lost a heart breaker on the road. This time around on their own turf however, the Chargers rode a huge performance by Jasmine Talley (19 Points) and Sydney Collins (who had a double-double) to an absolute rout of the Cougars in a final score of 50-21.
The Chargers started off the game red hot shooting, hitting their first four attempted shots and quickly jumping out to a lead thanks to rebounds and layups from Collins. Bianca Atkinson held the pace in her hands, with two early assists that helped her team jump to the lead. The Cougars only led once in this game, after an early 3-Pointer by Number 30 dropped in to give them a 1 point lead. After that, it was all Chargers.
Kayla Syrkes found herself under the net often, and after a rough start she was able to pull it together and pump out points and rebounds for the Chargers. Rebounds were the key all night, with Free Throws burning the Cougars. The Chargers hit their first nine free throw attempts easily, killing the Cougars who would eventually only shoot 1/10 (10%) the entire night at the free throw line.
The Chargers did have some foul troubles, but it wouldn't turn to bite them too hard as their lead continued to grow after continuous successful possessions with the ball. Ryann Banks also had a nice first half despite three fouls, collecting 4 points and 3 rebounds. Going into halftime, the Chargers were erasing all thoughts of the previous match-up with a mountainous 31-17 lead.
In the next half, the Chargers didn't miss a beat. Isis Moore, who started the game cold, got hot shooting the ball and hit all 4 of her field goal attempts in the second half to grow a measurable point total of 9 on the night, just short of double digits. Talley also began to heat up, draining 2 of her 3 Three-Pointers on the night in the second half which contributed to her big scoring night.
The Cougars would continue their struggles, not hitting a single successful three in the entire 3rd Quarter. Turnovers and missed opportunities were the final nail in the coffin for them, as the Chargers spent most of the final quarter of the game passing the ball around to bleed the clock.
In the final seconds, Talley tried to break 20 points but missed a lay up that would've also given the Chargers their biggest lead of the night. It was no problem at all though, as it was already a definite win for the Chargers who kept the ball out of the Cougars hands for as long as they could. As the Cougars let the clock tick down to end the game, it was the Chargers on their home court who got revenge and slaughtered the Cougars in a 50-21 win. Their next challenge will come Friday night, as they look to sweep the season series against James Monroe.
