Varsity Women's Basketball: King George Foxes vs. Chancellor Chargers
Tuesday night's match-up between the Chancellor Chargers and King George Foxes wasn't a game for fans of shooting. Both teams failed to get above 30% FG shooting, but the Foxes were able to ride off big performances from Number 32 and Number 21, who combined for 19 of the game's points. In an overtime thriller, the Foxes pulled away and shut out the Chargers in the last quarter of play with a 39-34 victory.
Early on the Chargers would come out hot as fire, as they quickly put up seven unanswered points thanks to Sydney Collins and Kayla Syrkes who found the ball three times under the net and cashed it in for points. The Foxes would stall the Chargers' offense after that though, and for the remaining three minutes only allowed 3 points while playing catch-up. Turnovers became costly, as the Foxes and Chargers both traded them often but the Foxes cashed in more often to make the game score close at 10-7.
Both teams saw struggles with shooting going into the second quarter. With only three total field goals, most points came from free throws as the penalties stacked up on both sides. Two Chargers sat with three penalties, and on Fox sat with the same. Thanks to some good free throws by Bianca Atkinson, the Chargers would be able to stay in control at halftime with a 16-14 lead.
Coming out of the half, nothing seemed to change for the two teams. The Chargers struggled with shooting consistency and the Foxes had to rely on Number 21's four steals that were turned into points. Atkinson continued her impressive free shooting, and both teams started to get physical and fouls became problems for multiple players. After three quarters of play though, the Chargers still desperately clung to a 27-25 lead.
Despite eight different Chargers accounting for points at this point in the game, the score told a different story. The teams were in a dead-locked rebound battle as the Foxes struggled for a tie and the Chargers just tried to stay alive. The Foxes would eventually get what they wanted, after a late travelling penalty put the ball back in their hands with a chance to tie, and Number 32 did just that for them. With a locked score of 33-33, both teams headed into Overtime thirsty for a win.
The final quarter of play had to be highlighted by the Foxes' Number 10, who had struggled all night and put it all in the past as she nailed four straight free throws to give the Foxes a comfortable lead and an eventual win. The Chargers' lost their best free throw shooter Atkinson with a minute remaining, and that spelled doom as they failed to score for the rest of Overtime. The Foxes were able to walk away with a 39-34 victory that's bound to result in a future bitter game.
