The Chancellor Chargers have started their 2016 athletic campaign off very strong. In the Fall the main sports being played by Chargers are Football, Volleyball, Field Hockey, and Cross Country. All four teams that competed this year have gone into the postseason with success, excluding the football program who doesn’t kick off their postseason until later this week. That Football team, though, is one of the highest ranked football teams in school history.
This year, the school’s Field Hockey team slipped at times but was able to find its’ footing and find a productive season with a very young team that has plenty of room to grow. Seniors Lilly Church and Tess Hogan found plenty of offensive success as they helped mentor other stars-in-the-making like Emma Bernard and Sarah Stillabower. After an average regular season, the Chargers grabbed the number 3 seed in the playoffs which gave them a home playoff game against the Louisa Lions where they cruised and slaughtered the Lions. Next they ran into a very tough opponent in the Eastern View Cyclones who they had played well against well all year. After a shaky start on defense, they regrouped and kept the Cyclones scoreless for the majority of the rest of the game. The Cyclones defense held the Chargers scoreless however, and the season ended for the Chargers earlier than liked. Despite this, they still had a good growing year as the team will look forward to next year for revenge a goal to ultimately come back out on top and revive the programs’ incredible history.
The Chargers’ volleyball team experienced a very up and down year, as they floated around a .500 winning percentage all year but it was still a great season that was filled with tough opponents. The Chargers finished their season with a record of 10-8 which was good for a third seed in their district tournament. Overall the Chargers won 34 sets and lost 30 sets, led by team captain Brittany Margelos and three other seniors on a fairly young team. In the playoffs, the Chargers cruised early on to knock off the Caroline Cavaliers, but fell short in the semifinals against the King George Foxes who came energized. It was another great building season for the team that will look forward to a large senior class next year and look to knock off their rival, the Courtland Cougars. One of the Volleyball team’s strongest components this year was their wall in front of the net, led by Joselyn Jones and Sydney Collins who recorded a great year with more blocks than anyone else on the team.
The last sport I did a majority of the coverage for this year, and the most popular spot by far that filled the stands both at home and away games all season, was the Varsity Football team. This team was loaded with 21 seniors, 20 who were starters, and the entire student body had been looking forward to the 2016 season for years. Why? Because the team already has multiple players with offers to play at Division One schools including Senior stand-out Yetur Matos who has committed to a great school and program in Penn State. Also, don’t forget the wide receiver who leads almost every offensive category, E.J. Jenkins, who has committed to Old Dominion with a terrifying presence standing tall and strong at 6’6. More seniors have received offers and will probably see more before the season ends, but for now their sights are set on Friday as they host a playoff game for the first time since 2009.
This season for the Chargers included an incredible start which saw a road game against Riverbend to open the season and a home game against Massaponax. The Chargers met this test head on, with two victories that almost nobody else outside of Chancellor was predicting. The Massaponax game was one to remember, as it ended 50-47 as a completely full stadium couldn’t sit still. A Week 3 loss to Eastern View was a bit disappointing, but it will be great fuel for the Chargers if they get to see them again for revenge after being beaten in overtime. And if not for a rain-delayed game that put the Chargers on a two week bye and a field that wasn’t ready to be played on, the Chargers may have had a perfect first half. The loss to James River is the only blemish this year on an otherwise incredible season, but that loss is completely in the past for the Chargers.
In the second half of the season, the Chargers never lost a game sweeping away opponents including Courtland, James Monroe, Caroline, King George, and Spotsylvania to charge their way into the postseason. Over the course of these five games, the Chancellor defense outscored opponents 235 - 44. The football team will now set their sights to the Friday game at home against Powhatan High School.
