Varsity Women's Basketball : Massaponax Panthers vs. Chancellor Chargers
The Chancellor Chargers (0 - 1) opened up their regular season against the Massaponax Panthers (1 - 0) Monday night, and had a rough opener. Shooting problems throughout the game are what hurt the Chargers the most, as the Panthers ran away with a 51 - 22 victory.
The Chargers did get off to a quick start however, easily scoring on their first four shots of the game to open up an 8 - 2 lead. After that, it was all downhill as the Chargers didn't score a single field goal again until the second half. The Panthers dominated on the court with an aggressive defense paired with a quick offense. The Panthers would score 12 unanswered points to end the first quarter with a 14 - 8 early lead.
The second quarter was purely dominated by the Panthers. They outscored the Chargers 12 - 1, building their lead while creating havoc for the Chargers offense making it near impossible for them to score. The Chargers had a rough time passing the ball with multiple turnovers, and it'll be something to work on as the year goes on for a young squad.
Entering the third quarter down by 17, the Chargers looked to improve and build some momentum to build a comeback. They did shoot the ball better with some field goals and impressive free throws by Senior Alexis Lawson who went 2 for 3 on the night. Junior Sydney Collins also had a good third quarter coming off a season of volleyball that just ended a couple weeks earlier. Collins recorded four rebounds on the night, which led her team.
In the fourth quarter, the shooting woes returned for the Chargers and time just seemed to melt away. The Chargers were only able to put up two more points as the Panthers kept them quiet. The Chargers only shot for 16% (7 for 45) on the night, and it will definitely be something they look to improve on.
The Chargers will get back on the court Friday night, as they will host the Louisa Lions at home. This will be the Chargers first conference game of the year, and they will look to start off strong and build off of tonight's performance.
