Rough Start Dooms Chargers Against Panthers

Varsity Men's Basketball : Massaponax Panthers vs. Chancellor Chargers

Monday night's match-up between the Chancellor Chargers (3 - 4) and Massaponax Panthers (8 - 0) seemed like everything would fall the Panthers' way early on as they dominated in the first quarter. The rest of the game turned out more equal, as the Chargers would end up losing 51 - 66.

The game started out with 12 unanswered points for the Panthers, who tore apart the Chargers defense that came out a bit slow. The Panther's Number 5 got the scoring going early, with five by himself straight to start the game. The Chargers on the other hand would have to wait 5 minutes and 41 seconds before they hit their first successful field goal. At the end of one, the Chargers were looking at a terrible deficit with the score 25 - 4.

The second quarter would feature a more consistent Chargers shooting, as they shot better from all sides of the court. E.J. Jenkins started off the scoring with a quick and easy 3-Pointer that set a new tone for the Chargers offense. Robbie Foster would feed off that energy, as he collected 6 straight points to help the Chargers attempt to make a comeback. The Panthers wouldn't let up though, continuing to have a defense that forced many turnovers and prevented any easy shots for the Chargers. Going into halftime, the Panthers still led big 39 - 18.

Coming out of the half, the Chargers remained consistent and started to get some help from Jenkins who had a rough first half with only 3 points. The Panthers would come out opposite though, with 5 early turnovers that helped the Chargers build some momentum and tighten the game with 6 unanswered points. Jason Brown also showed more of a presence, collecting a majority of the 10 total rebounds he recorded in the game during the third quarter. The Chargers showed a stronger presence, but still trailed 52 - 37.

The last quarter featured another quarter where the Chargers seemed to match the Panthers' offense, as both teams put up 14 points. The Panthers got most of their points at the free throw line in the final minutes, however. The Chargers were unable to keep up with the Panthers, and the harsh first quarter became even harsher as it showed to be the thorn in the Chargers' side that night. The final score would be Massaponax 66 Chancellor 51.

Overall in the game, the Chargers showed consistency with rebounds which is something they've done all game. Brown and Jenkins would combine for 22 rebounds on the game, who both led all players. The Chargers have fallen below the .500 mark, but it was a tough start to the season that they will come out of looking good. Their next game will be in January, against Mountain View.

Foul Frenzy Ends In Chargers Favor

Varsity Women's Basketball : Brooke Point Black Hawks vs. Chancellor Chargers

Thursday night's match-up between the Brooke Point Black Hawks (0 - 4) and Chancellor Chargers (4 - 3) was one that free-throw enthusiasts would've loved to watch. The game included a combined 58 free throws, which accounted for 38% of the game's scoring. The game went back and forth, until it eventually would fall in the Chargers favor with a 43 - 35 victory.

The game started off very slowly, with both teams exchanging the ball through turnovers until Sophomore Bianca Atkinson ended the dry spell with a 3-Point shot. The Black Hawks and Chargers would start trading off more successful shots, but not without penalty problems on both sides. The Chargers struggled at the line, while the Black Hawks fed off of it getting the majority of their scoring from the line. After one quarter of play it was Brooke Point 8 Chancellor 11.

The second quarter of the game seemed to mimic the first, with plenty of fouls and turnovers. On a positive note however, the Chargers Junior Sydney Collins kept consistency under the net collecting a handful of rebounds and field goals after offensive rebounds. This consistency would help propel the Chargers and keep them in the game even though they would trail 20 - 17 going into the half.

The Chargers came out of halftime shooting, and shooting well. The Chargers cleaned up the turnovers, only committing three in the 3rd quarter, which prevented quick and easy scoring for the Wildcats. The Wildcats would continue to struggle shooting, as the quick Chargers defense kept the Black Hawks on their toes. The Black Hawks would only complete one successful shot the entire quarter that wasn't a free throw, as the Chargers caught up and took the lead 29 - 27.

In the final quarter the Black Hawks lost control on the game, committing 7 fouls that sent the Chargers to the foul line for points. The Chargers took advantage of this, especially Atkinson who would go on to complete 8 of 14 free throws on the night to help push the Chargers to a win. Her great shooting put the nail in the Black Hawks coffin late, as she seemed to never miss a single shot and prevent any sort of comeback. The Chargers would collect their fourth win of the season, and continue to try and build momentum going further into the season.

The lady Chargers will go on winter break for about a week before they will go and play in a Christmas tournament up in Maryland. In that tournament they will look to continue their successful season.

Started Rough But Got Out Tough

JV Men's Basketball : Northumberland Indians vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers and Northumberland Indians. Thursday night was a game of excitement as the two teams went head to head in a blood boiling game. These JV teams showed that they both live and breathe basketball.

The Indians get the ball first but #23, of the Chargers, quickly turns over the ball passes it to #24 and makes a 2 point shot. But the Indians show no nerves as #11 makes an impressive lay up then slams into the wall with a Charger in a failed attempt to block the ball. The Indians would come back again with impressive skill from #23 while he rebounds a ball and quickly makes a 2pt shot. The Chargers don't sweat it when #10 makes a three point shot off balance from being hit by an Indian. Quarter One's score was Chargers 7 , Indians 10.

Within 15 seconds into the quarter #4 makes a field goal to start things off. #00 was a big component in the second quarter for the Chargers as he repeatedly slams ball from other team and makes impressive turn overs. The Indians definitely know how to keep their heads on a swivel. When a ball was lost #21 quickly found it rolling off the court and got the ball back from the Indians to score shortly after by #34. Quarter Two's score was Chargers 17 , Indians 18.

The fact that there were over 7 turnovers in this quarter from the Indians was insane. But the Chargers came into this quarter as a new team. #3 was an animal making 6 points and stealing balls mid throw. Chancellor made a huge come back to grab the lead. Quarter Three's score was Chargers 34 , Indians 28.

This was the last quarter but it was surprisingly slow. Most points came from Chancellor. But who had the best play of the game by far? #4 of Chargers had the ball and he was slowly walking up court. What he didn't know was that an Indian was behind him, #11. The Indian's #11 took the ball while #4 was dribbling and ran across the court. #4 was mad and ran out to #11. #11 jumped to make a shot and #4 bulldozed him slamming both of them to the ground ending in #11 missing the shot. #4 was obviously mad and sat out after but it was crazy to watch. The final score was Chargers 48 , Indians 36.

It was overall a great game to watch. Both teams showed skill and crazy tricks. Chancellor Chargers are definitely excited about their win. But Northumberland is waiting for their next game. Lets see how the teams do next time!

Chargers Come Back Late To Sweep Indians

Varsity Men's Basketball : Northumberland Indians vs. Chancellor Chargers

Thursday night's match-up between the Chancellor Chargers (2-2) and Northumberland Indians (0-3) almost felt like a Friday night football game. Two stars from the fall season, Yetur Matos and E.J. Jenkins, combined for 33 points on the night to help their team battle from behind and sweep the season series against the Indians. Down by four at the half, the Chargers were able to storm back to a 77 - 67 victory.

Both teams in the first quarter looked a bit off, as shooting was a problem for both teams. The Indians showed command early, and they kept the gym quiet by downing three 3-Point Shots to give an early lead. The Chargers regrouped behind Omair Shah who posted an energizing three-pointer, and they were able to close the first quarter only down by one. Jenkins also showed his menacing presence underneath the net, with a block that knocked an Indian to his butt. Going into the second quarter, the Chargers trailed 16 - 15.

The action didn't stand by and wait headed into the second, as both teams struggled to maintain any sort of lead. C.J. Washington played notably well, setting the court for the Chargers multiple times by passing to all sides of the court to stretch the Indians' defense. Jenkins brought even more power into the quarter, as he found separation and was all alone with the net where he jumped and slammed in a dunk that echoed off the walls and sent the stands into a frenzy.

This energized the Chargers who were still struggling shooting on the night, and after this those shooting woes went away. Josiah Jones and Jason Brown found more action, as Jones knocked in three field goals while Brown came down with multiple offensive and defensive rebounds to set his team up for more points. Most notably of all however, had to be just as the first half ended. Everyone expected the Chargers to head into the half with a tie, but Michael Freeman had other ideas as he shot from the half court line and made the 3-Point Shot. The crowd, and I, burst into excitement jumping up and down as the Chargers would head into the second half with a 36 - 33 lead.

The second half wouldn't start out the way the Chargers had hoped to coming out of an energized first half. Their shooting percentage dropped and turnovers rose, but that didn't stop them from still finding the net and keeping the Indians in check. It was Jenkins again, who late in the third twisted around and tossed the ball from behind his back to find the net and two points for his team. Northumberland only scored four points after this shot with 4 minutes to play, and it allowed the Chargers to climb back and only trail 57 - 53 headed into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter of the game, especially late, was purely dominated by the Chargers. All sides of the ball started to click, and the Indians started to struggle with shooting. Matos sparked a fire late, with 8 consecutive personal points, that helped his team build momentum and eventually stomp over the Indians late. Nine second half turnovers were a distant memory, as ball control became key and all players kept things tight. To cap off an incredible night and send the home crowd home even more happy, Jenkins was alone with the net again and similar to earlier in the game he crushed a dunk for points. The final score would round out to be 77 - 67, with five Chargers finishing with double digit points.

This win will be big for the Chargers as they look to build momentum going into a home stretch that features games against Colonial Forge, Massaponax, and Mountain View. They also saw much improvement tonight, with big performances all around. Though they did turn the ball over 17 times, they did collect 41 total rebounds, outpacing the Indians by 31.

JV Chargers Start Hot But Cool Down Against Cyclones

JV Women's Basketball: Eastern View Cyclones vs. Chancellor Chargers

Article By Christelle Temple

The Eastern View Cyclones and Chancellor Changers have been rivals for a long time. This Monday night the Charger Girls JV basketball team was waiting and ready for a victory. They were also hoping to get their second victory of the school year as the game begins.

The game started off with a foul from Chancellor, giving Number 15 of Eastern View her first point of the game at the free throw line. It seemed almost repetitive all night with the majority of the points coming from fouls, by both teams. Chancellor’s Number 5 was definitely doing her part with multiple offensive rebounds. The double duo from Chancellor seemed like professionals with their team work. It was as if they knew where the other was going before they went, Number 15 and Number 5.After the First Quarter, it was Chancellor 7 Eastern View 5.

Eastern View got the ball first in quarter two but Number 15 stole the ball quickly. 42 makes the first score of the quarter giving chancellor two points. The Chargers showed skill repeatedly stealing the ball back from Eastern View. Eastern View, however, showed theirs with free throws while Chancellor kept committing fouls. Ending the second quarter with Chancellor in the lead, 16 to 11.

Eastern View showed no mercy going into the third quarter with Number 40 making 5 points in under 3 minutes of the quarter. Eastern View was quickly catching up with Chancellor after Number 22 and Number 24 both scored 4 points. Chancellor’s number 15 was definitely showing that she could keep up with communication towards her team. But Eastern View finished the quarter in front of Chancellor 20 - 22.

Eastern View started the next quarter off strong once again with Number 40 scoring the first 4 points of the quarter. Chancellor tried to even the score with Number 23 and Number 5 making back to back shots. But in this quarter alone 5 fouls were called against Chancellor. Most of them ended up giving Eastern View easy opportunities for more points. The game would end with a foul from Eastern View. Number 23, for Chancellor, made the last point in the game. The game ended with a score of Eastern View 37 Chancellor 29.

Both teams did a great job playing. Some star players would definitely be Number 15 from Chancellor and Number 40 from Eastern View. The next game for Chancellor will be Thursday and they will definitely want a win to make up for the loss.

Chargers Ride Impressive Offense To First Win Against Cyclones

Varsity Women's Basketball : Eastern View Cyclones vs. Chancellor Chargers

Monday's match-up between the Chancellor Chargers (1-2) and Eastern View Cyclones (0-3) was an impressive showcase of improvement for the Chargers. With 41 first half points, the Chargers made their shooting problems a distant memory as they rode to a 59 - 45 victory.

The first quarter was all Chargers, as they only turned the ball over one time and shot for 80% on Field Goals, while also nailing two three-point shots. The defense kept the Cyclones in check, forcing multiple turnovers and keeping the ball in the Chargers' hands. Junior Sydney Collins continued to have an impressive start to the year with her 4 rebounds showing her dominating presence under the net. The Chargers were able to double the Cyclones score, coming out with a 24 - 12 lead.

The Chargers momentum didn't slow down in the second quarter, where they continued to nail field goals efficiently. Nobody was probably better than Jasmine Talley, who led the team with her 11 first half points. The defense continued to impress, only allowing 12 points again as the Cyclones struggled to keep possession despite collecting multiple three-point shots. There was no question as to who the leader was headed into the half, as the Chargers boasted an incredible 41 - 24 lead.

The third quarter was a bit shaky for the Chargers, but nonetheless still a very great quarter. The defense minimized damage caused by an uncharacteristic 6 turnovers, while the offense continued to keep pressure on the Cyclones. The Chargers watched a 19 point lead shrink to just a 7 point lead, but their confidence was still high. Junior Taylor Collins had an impressive quarter as she led the way with rebounds, securing the ball 4 times. The Chargers would head into the final quarter with 49 - 42 lead in a closer than comfortable game that had started off dominant.

The Chargers righted the ship in the final quarter of the game, as their shooting percentage went back up and they kept the ball in their possession for a majority of the quarter. They also broke their season record for points, scoring 59 to break the previous 49 point record as the Chargers just continue to score more and more each game. Sophomore Bianca Atkinson led the way at the free throw line, helping the Chargers get six out of seven shots there. The defense also only allowed three total points, which helped the Chargers charge to a 59 - 45 win.

The Lady Chargers will head on the road for the first time this year on Thursday, as they go to face the Dinwiddie Generals (0-2). They will look to get back to .500 on the year, and continue to improve their game to a higher level.

Chargers Improve, But Drop Close One To Lions

Varsity Women's Basketball : Louisa Lions vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers (0 - 2) looked to improve Friday night, and they did just that in a tight match up against the Louisa Lions (2 - 0). The Chargers passed the ball better, didn't turn the ball over as much, and shot better with free throws compared to Monday night's disappointing loss. In a game that came down to the final minute, it was the Lions who came out on top 51 - 49.

The game started off slightly sluggish, as both teams' offenses started off slowly. The Chargers were trailing 8 - 2 in the final two minutes, but their offense flared to life and quickly put up 6 unanswered points to end the first quarter and make things all locked up at 8 - 8. Junior Sydney Collins had a big first quarter, collecting 4 of the Chargers 8 points and helping set up the offense with 3 rebounds.

Going into the second quarter, the Chargers came onto the court with the same fiery intensity they left it with. They quickly put up 6 more points to make it 12 unanswered and a big lead against the Lions. This didn't discourage the Lions however, who were able to respond late in the quarter with 6 unanswered points of their own to keep the game close. Senior Lachaunda Patterson was also able to knock in the Chargers' first 3-pointer of the year before the half ended. Going to the half, the games was still deadly tight as the Chargers led 22 - 21.

The third quarter was one to forget for the Chargers, as problems that had plagued them in their season opener popped up again. After only turning the ball over 6 times in the first half, the Chargers turned the ball over 9 times in the third quarter alone setting up the Lions multiple times for points. Despite the turnovers and shooting problems, the Chargers were able to pull it together late to quickly put up 4 points in the final minute of the quarter. Louisa held the lead though, with a score of 36 - 30.

The final quarter was one fullof excitement and more scoring than any other quarter. The Lions dominated in the opening minutes, but the Chargers made things interesting as the quarter ticked on. With an incredible 3-pointer from Charger No. 44 to electrify the the crowd, the Chargers started connecting on more shots. The Lions faced pressure they hadn't seen since the second quarter and the game grew intense. In the final minutes, multiple Lions hit pivotal free shots to ensure a Lions victory for the night with a final score of 51 - 49.

Despite the loss, the Chargers showed much more improvement on both sides of the ball. They will still look to improve on a shot percentage of 38%, but other than that the team is on the right track towards success. They will stay at home to face the struggling Eastern View Cyclones (0 - 2) on Monday night.

Shooting Problems Plague Chargers Against Panthers

Varsity Women's Basketball : Massaponax Panthers vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers (0 - 1) opened up their regular season against the Massaponax Panthers (1 - 0) Monday night, and had a rough opener. Shooting problems throughout the game are what hurt the Chargers the most, as the Panthers ran away with a 51 - 22 victory.

The Chargers did get off to a quick start however, easily scoring on their first four shots of the game to open up an 8 - 2 lead. After that, it was all downhill as the Chargers didn't score a single field goal again until the second half. The Panthers dominated on the court with an aggressive defense paired with a quick offense. The Panthers would score 12 unanswered points to end the first quarter with a 14 - 8 early lead.

The second quarter was purely dominated by the Panthers. They outscored the Chargers 12 - 1, building their lead while creating havoc for the Chargers offense making it near impossible for them to score. The Chargers had a rough time passing the ball with multiple turnovers, and it'll be something to work on as the year goes on for a young squad.

Entering the third quarter down by 17, the Chargers looked to improve and build some momentum to build a comeback. They did shoot the ball better with some field goals and impressive free throws by Senior Alexis Lawson who went 2 for 3 on the night. Junior Sydney Collins also had a good third quarter coming off a season of volleyball that just ended a couple weeks earlier. Collins recorded four rebounds on the night, which led her team.

In the fourth quarter, the shooting woes returned for the Chargers and time just seemed to melt away. The Chargers were only able to put up two more points as the Panthers kept them quiet. The Chargers only shot for 16% (7 for 45) on the night, and it will definitely be something they look to improve on.

The Chargers will get back on the court Friday night, as they will host the Louisa Lions at home. This will be the Chargers first conference game of the year, and they will look to start off strong and build off of tonight's performance.

Incredible Season, Incredible Moments

Top 10 Chargers Football Moments Of The Year

10. 15 Charger Representatives Make All-Conference Team

When the regular season ended a couple of weeks ago, All-Conference teams were announced across the state. To cap off an incredible regular season, eight players were named to the first team and seven players were named to the second team. On the first team this year is Jason Brown, Lovell Armstead, E.J. Jenkins, Noah Manuel, George Brown Jr., Yetur Matos, and Cameron Kneibbe. On the second team was C.J. Washington, Zack O'neal, Ausitn Seipp, E.J. Fields, Damonte Pratt, and Lovell Armstead. Lastly, Yetur Matos and Jason Brown were awarded co-players of the year for both of their impressive defensive and offensive years.

9. Stunning The Red-Hot 'Jackets At Their Homecoming Game

On Octoer 14, the Chargers went on the road to face the James Monroe Yellow Jackets and simply stunned the home crowd. All of the Seniors on the Chargers had never beaten the Yellow Jackets before in their high school campaign. The defense silenced the Yellow Jackets' offense all night. This was a monumental 24 - 7 win that charged up the defense for the rest of the season. Jason Brown's armled the offense down the field multiple times with long drives that tired out the Yellow Jackets' defense. Also the Chargers defense, led by Yetur Matos, forced multiple three-and-outs. Thanks to a pivotal interception by Damonte Pratt early on, the Chargers were able to dominate often. This win was especially huge for the Chancellor fans, as the completely full Yellow Jackets' bleachers had to go home without a win.

8. JV Football Gets Revenge, Stomps Foxes

Freshman quarterback Trevor Gleason had a long wee facing both Spotsylvania's JV and Varsity squads, while also having to try and overcome a challenge early Saturday morning. That challenge was the King George Foxes who had slaughtered Chancellor earlier in the year. The Chargers met the challenge head on, quickly dismantling King George and capturing a JV Championship. This should excite Charger fans as the future is looking very bright. This school's program is showing improvement every year, and it all starts with the JV squad.

7. Broken Records All Around

All year, Chancellor's Senior class was breaking records on the field. Yetur Matos broke the all-time sack record for Chancellor against rival Courtland Cougars, and then went on later in the year to set a new mark for the all-time record. Chancellor's kicker Austin Seipp punted his way into Chancellor's record books, as he broke the all-time field goals made record. With consistent kicking and perseverance through injury during all four years, this was no surprise for Seipp. Lastly was quarterback Jason Brown who broke the all-time touchdown record for Chancellor with his 78 total touchdowns. The record was broken at James Monroe, and he would end up finishing his high school career with 94 total touchdowns.

6. Never Upsetting The Home Crowd

This year the Chancellor fans never left a home game upset. Over the year the Chargers played six home games and didn't lose a single one. Winning against Massaponax, Liberty, Courtland, Caroline, King George, and Powhatan. The Chargers offense also enjoyed the home turf, scoring 303 of their 492 total points on the year at home. Chancellor never played a game at home without the home bleachers being full to cheer them on. Walking through the stands, everybody was family and together for that night under the lights, cheering on a single team to an unforgetable year.

5. Slaughtering Powhatan In Playoffs

As the weather got colder, the Chargers offense and defense only got hotter at home. The Powhatan Indians came into the opening round of the playoffs with an impressive 8 - 2 record that would scare most, but not the Chargers. The defense shut down and explosive offense all night, while the offense continued to stay red-hot and put up 59 points easily. There were questions as to whether this team could handle the pressure, but all those questions were blown away after one quarter of play. Lovell Armstead probably had the biggest performance of the night, having his hand in almost every play. The Chargers needed a powerful running game and Armstead more than answered the call to action. This was also Chancellor's first home playoff victory since 2009.

4. Defense Puts Up The "Doughnut" Against The Foxes

It was a big night for the Senior-heavy Chancellor squad against a team that had proven to have an incredible rushing attack all year. You wouldn't have known that on this Friday night however, as the Chargers held the King George Foxes to 63 total combined yards on the night. It was Senior Night and emotions were high, but this didn't hamper the Chargers at all, clinching a home playoff game along the way. Yetur Matos and George Brown Jr. both had two sacks on the night, along with Ruben Niamien and Damonte Pratt who both pulled in an interception to keep the Foxes completely silent.

3. Chick-Fil-A Bowl Against Riverbend

Though this game isn't officially considered a rivalry, Chancellor and Riverbend High School are only seperated by two miles which raises the tensions between these two teams. C.J. Washington was able to open up the scoring in this game with an incredible, over the shoulder in the corner of the end-zone catch that gave Chancellor an early lead. The game was tight for the rest of the night though, as the two impressive teams played shut-down defense until Riverbend slipped up first. Lovell Armstead started his powerful 2016 year with a touchdown run to give the Chargers a lead, and later returned a punt 40 yards for a touchdown to put a nail in the coffin. There was no absence of energy all night, as both teams wanted more than anything to beat their neighbors.

2. Defense Destroys Rival Courtland On Homecoming Night

Homecoming night is always a special night for students, but when you add on a rivalry football game into the mix, things only get more crazy. Courtland is known to be a powerhouse in Chancellor's region, and Chancellor shut them down. The defense played a major part, forcing turnovers and benefiting from four sacks from Yetur Matos, Noah Manuel, and George Brown Jr.. Things may have been shaky early, but the Chargers regrouped and shut down the Courtland offense en route to a 38 - 23 victory. This was a great cap-off to a crazy first six weeks of the season, as the Chargers began to build their momentum for a postseason run.

1. Snapping Massaponax's 34 Regular Season Game Winning Streak

If anybody tells you they watched this game sitting down, they're lying to you. This was a game that should be considered as one of the best games in Virginia this year, as at no point did on team truly have an advantage over the other. Chancellor was the underdog, and Massaponax was the powerhouse of Spotsylvania County that hadn't lost a regular season game in almost four years. That all changed in Week 2, as Jason Brown and E.J. Jenkins led the Chargers to an unbelievable win. Brown recorded seven total touchdowns on the night, connecting with the towering target Jenkins multiple times. Massaponax tried to drive and tie things up late in the game, but ultimately failed thanks to some pressure from E.J. Fields that caused an interception and a stunning 50 - 47 Chargers victory. This game was a tone setter for the Chargers, and they set a very malicious tone going into the rest of the year.

We are thankful for our Chancellor Chargers this Thanksgiving Week, and all of the incredible moments they provided for us this 2016 season. EMAC

Chargers Season Ends As They Fall To Cyclones

Varsity Football : Chancellor Chargers vs. Eastern View Cyclones

Friday night's huge match-up between the Chancellor Chargers and Eastern View Cyclones was just as intense and well fought as everyone expected. The score went back and forth as emotions were high and the stands were full, but in the end it was the Cyclones who came out on top with a final score of 28 - 24.

The Chargers set up while being spectated by a huge crowd Friday night.
In the first quarter of the game, the Cyclones got off to a very quick start putting up 14 unanswered points. The passing game exploited the Chargers' secondary, as two big drives made it seem as if the Cyclones might just storm on by.

That was, until the Chargers made a huge response to end the quarter as Senior Jason Brown ran from 18 yards out, dodging multiple defenders to get the Chargers some points. Brown came off the field a little shaky, but that didn't stop him from playing the rest of the game. After one quarter, it was Cyclones 14 Chargers 7.

Going into the next quarter the Chargers didn't slow down at all, as Senior E.J. Jenkins and a Cyclone defender both jumped up for a ball thrown by ball. Jenkins came down with it, running 80 yards for a touchdown that tied the game sending the Charger fans into a frenzy.

After some very good defense by both teams, the Chargers pushed down the field late to add on a 35 yard field goal by Senior Austin Seipp. At halftime, it was Chargers 17 Cyclones 14.

The Chargers had put up 17 unanswered points, and the Cyclones knew that full well going into the second half. They came back into the game using a devestating rushing attack led by Trey Holmes who hadn't played at all in the first half. The Cyclones used his legs to add seven points, and put the game in their advantage with a score of 21 - 17.

After Chancellor's offense had a quick three and out, the defense really stepped up as Seniors Noah Manuel and E.J. Fields both recorded sacks forcing the Cyclones to punt. With good field position, the Chargers charged down the field. Junior Lovell Armstead capped it off with a short touchdown run to give the Chargers the lead back, making the score 24 - 21.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Cyclones used their running attack to hurt the Chargers. The biggest player of the second half had to be Holmes, who put up 127 rushing yards and helped set up the game winning touchdown for the Cyclones. Eddie Russel passed the ball to D'ago Hunter, and the Cyclones had the lead back again with a score of 28 - 24.

The Chargers would get the ball back, but were unable to convert a 4th and 6, giving the ball back to the Cyclones. And after Holmes rushed the ball into Chargers' territory, the game was over and ended in the Cyclones' favor. It was a hard fought, incredible game that had everyone on the edge of their seats.

The Eastern View Cyclones will move on to the quarterfinals to take on the Dinwiddie Patriots next Friday, as the Chancellor Chargers incredible 2016 campaign came to an end. This team had huge heart and it was incredible watching them play all four year. The team went from winning one game in 2013, to stealing all our hearts as we watched them beat Massaponax, Courtland, and Powhatan all at home. Thank you so much, to all the players and coaches who made this an incredible season.

Chargers Look For Revenge Against Undefeated Cyclones

Varsity Football : Playoff Preview Chancellor (3) vs. Eastern View (2)

The last two times these teams faced each other, the Chancellor Chargers have not seen much go their way. Last year in their playoff opener, the Eastern View Cyclones took advantage of a badly injured Chargers squad that was limping into the playoffs. Then in a rematch this year on Week 3 of the regular season, the Cyclones came back from down 18 at the half to beat a red-hot Chargers team.

When the Chargers head back to Culpeper again, they will look to change the tide. Eastern View leads the overall all-time series 5 - 4 since the two teams started playing each other in 2009, but Chancellor has outscored them 282-225 in those games. These two teams play very different teams, as the only common opponent they had in the regular season was the Spotsylvania Knights, who both teams beat fairly well.

Chancellor’s season has had multiple marquee moments, as recently as slaughtering the Powhatan Indians 59 - 13 and as far back as upsetting Massaponax in September 50 - 47. Eastern View, on the other had, has benefitted from a weaker schedule, but still has some impressive wins against Brentsville, Orange County, and probably biggest of all Chancellor.

Also worth noting, there will be 18 active players in this match-up who were given Conference 19 First Team honors this year. There are only 33 players given this honor, and these two teams account for over half of them in a Conference with 7 teams.

So, how does Chancellor dismantle a team that has been giving them troubles recently? Well, coming into this game the Chargers are healthier than usual with all their key weapons active including Senior Jason Brown (who missed the playoff game in 2015 with a broken ankle) and Senior Yetur Matos (who missed the regular season game earlier this year). They will also look to build off of Junior Lovell Armstead’s incredible performance against Powhatan the previous week, while incorporating Senior C.J. Washington back into the team’s high powered offense. Lastly, Senior E.J. Jenkins is bound to continue his incredible season with more receptions after recording 95 receiving yards against Powhatan.

What about Eastern View? It’s hard to find things for a team that is 11 - 0 on the year and is a program that has come a long way since its foundation in 2008. But even the undefeated have things to work on, like improving first-half play. This year a majority of points for the Cyclones has come late in games which is especially dangerous for opponents. The defense this year for the Cyclones has been just short of incredible. Also the Cyclones offensive line will face a huge test going against maybe the best defensive line they’ve seen all year. To be successful, they’ll need to keep their quarterback clean and keep providing lanes for their running game.

This Friday night at Eastern View, expect a brutal defensive battle against two teams that are having break-out years. The defensive and offensive lines are key for both teams, and whichever team sees the better performance may likely decide the outcome of the game. The winner of this game will play the winner of Monacan (5 Seed) vs. Dinwiddie (1 Seed). If Monacan wins, one of these teams will also bring football back to their home for the last time of the season.

Chargers Show No Nerves While Dismantling Indians In Playoff Opener

Varsity Football : Powhatan Indians vs. Chancellor Chargers

Coming into Friday night, the Chancellor Chargers (9 - 2) knew their key to success would be the rushing game. Junior Lovell Armstead made it clear early and often, that there was nothing to worry about as he ran a total 196 yards on the night. This running attack helped the Chargers pulverize the Powhatan Indians (8 - 3).

Two single season records were broken tonight by Chancellor Seniors. Yetur Matos pushed his sack total on the year to 17.5, beating the previous record of 15 in a single season. Also, Jason Brown collected his 39th total touchdown on the year which broke the Chancellor record.

The Chargers knew this week would be a huge test for the defense facing a high powered offense, and on the first drive of the game they made their presence known with a quick three-and-out. This set up good field position for the Chargers, who cashed it in for seven points thanks to a 15 yard rush by Armstead for his first touchdown of the night. Powhatan didn't go away quietly however, as they rushed down the field quickly behind the legs of Senior Justin DeLeon. The game was tied up 7 - 7 with some early fireworks.

The Chargers responding quickly putting up another seven points after Junior Jeff Pates set the team up with good field position after a decent return. During the drive the Indians got flagged for a personal foul when a defensive player made a late tackle on quarterback Jason Brown, who used his rage against the foul to power into the end-zone for Charger points putting them up 14 - 7.

Later in the quarter, Senior Noah Manuel sacked the Indians' quarterback Jacob Oglesby which turned the momentum into the Chargers favor as they quickly found their way back into the end-zone to make it 21 - 7. The Chargers were electrified as the first quarter ended, as they were having very powerful success against a tough opponent.

The Chargers' defense wasted no time putting the hurt on the Indians to start the second quarter. They quickly put the ball back into the offense's hands. The offense provided again, with their fourth straight scoring drive giving them a 21 point lead. The rushing game continued to produce, and Brown also started to find his groove in the pass game.

The Indians got the ball back and quickly tried establishing a deep pass game, but Armstead continued to have an incredible night as he picked off Oglesby to give the ball back to the offense. And for the fifth straight drive, the Chargers were in the end-zone. Senior E.J. Jenkins hauled in a 50 yard pass from Brown, which set things up for Armstead to dodge five defenders and dance in for the touchdown making it 35 - 7.

Later in the quarter, Matos recorded the single season record for sacks, as Oglesby had to get help to limp off the field ending his night short. The Chargers got the ball back and did a quick two minute drill to charge down the field where they were able to set things up for Senior Austin Seipp who punched in a 40 yard field goal to make the score 38 - 7 headed into halftime.

Both teams' defenses played rough going into the second half, as both team fought hard until the Chargers' Armsted made it into the end-zone again for his third touchdown of the night. Then four minutes later it was the Chargers scoring again, as Deion Atkinson hauled in a pass from 14 yards out to make it 52 - 7. Lastly to end off an impressive quarter, Senior Ky Friend recorded his first sack of the night to silence the Indians.

In the fourth quarter, the Chargers sent in some new faces including Freshman Trevor Gleason at quarterback and Dorian Robinson at runningback. The Charger machine continued to click though, as Robinson found his way into the end-zone for the last Charger score of the night making it 59 - 7.

After the game, Armstead was all smiles after putting up an insane stat line for the night. "Knowing that my line was blocking, and that we were all working together as a team is what helped me."

The Indians did show some late life, as they rushed there way to six points. The Chargers didn't let up, blocking the point after attempt, making the score 59 - 13. The score would stay that way as the Chargers sideline and stands went insane as they experienced their first home playoff win since 2009.

Next Friday night, the Chancellor Chargers (3 Seed) will hit the road looking for revenge against the Eastern View Cyclones (2 Seed), who handed them one of their only two losses this year. Emotions are running high and it will surely be an incredible game to look forward to.

Chargers Prepare For Prime Time Against Indians

Varsity Football : Playoff Preview Powhatan Indians vs. Chancellor Chargers

This Friday night the 3rd seed Chancellor Chargers (8 - 2) will host the 6th seed Powhatan Indians (8 - 2). Both of these teams had incredible seasons, as the Charger’s big wins came against Massaponax and Courtland while the Indians had big wins against Hopewell and Orange.

Friday’s match-up will be the seventh ever meeting on record between the two teams. The series is tied 3 - 3, along with both teams being 1 - 1 against each other in the playoffs. The playoffs have been sensitive topics for both teams as of late, as both teams haven’t won a playoff game since 2011. The Chargers were on the right path last year until their starting quarterback went down with a broken ankle and other injuries plagued their playoff hopes. The Indians have a program known to be successful every year, but their struggle in big time games has become their achilles heel as of late.

For the Chargers, they’ll be relying on a powerful running game that features Lovell Armstead and Damonte Pratt in the backfield who both have proven to be weapons on the field. The passing game is fairly comfortable, with big targets in E.J. Jenkins, Noah Manuel, and a fresh C.J. Washington coming off an injury for quarterback Jason Brown to find. The Indians have struggled with their secondary this year, so to keep the Chargers in check they’ll need to find a way to limit Jenkins and Manuel on deep passes, and find a way to slow down Washington on the Chargers’ deadly screen plays.

For Powhatan, they will bring about the same style. Running Back Justin DeLeon has the same build and style as Armstead, and that style has made him the Indian’s leading rusher. The Indians will look to expose a Charger front line that gave up a hefty amount of rushing yards in the early half of the season. Their quarterback, Jacob Oglesby, brings the same sort of dual threat seen in Brown. He has proven that he can use his legs to get out of rough situations, but he does have a history of turnovers. Gabe Satterwhite, Oglesby’s favorite target, is also having a good season and the Chargers will have to continue to suppress the passing game against a high powered offense in the Indians.

For Chancellor, their only weakness overall on the season was their two losses which came after leading at halftime. Their coaches have stressed all year about staying focused and going into each week at 0 - 0. For Powhatan, their biggest weakness is their offensive line which has struggled to give their quarterback any time to make decisions, forcing him to run. Yetur Matos on the Chargers, who recently broke the all-time sack record at Chancellor will be a deadly threat for Powhatan if their struggles continue.

Chancellor has turned their season around also, as the in the first half of their season they struggled going 3 - 2, giving up 157 total points to opponents. In the second half they swept their competition, giving up only a total 44 points. Powhatan saw their two losses come later on in the season, against Louisa and Albemarle who lead their local region.

Whoever wins this game will play the winner of King George (6 - 4) vs. Eastern View (10 - 0). If Eastern View wins, they will host. If King George wins, the team who wins this game will host.

Chargers Record Great Fall Season

The Chancellor Chargers have started their 2016 athletic campaign off very strong. In the Fall the main sports being played by Chargers are Football, Volleyball, Field Hockey, and Cross Country. All four teams that competed this year have gone into the postseason with success, excluding the football program who doesn’t kick off their postseason until later this week. That Football team, though, is one of the highest ranked football teams in school history.

This year, the school’s Field Hockey team slipped at times but was able to find its’ footing and find a productive season with a very young team that has plenty of room to grow. Seniors Lilly Church and Tess Hogan found plenty of offensive success as they helped mentor other stars-in-the-making like Emma Bernard and Sarah Stillabower. After an average regular season, the Chargers grabbed the number 3 seed in the playoffs which gave them a home playoff game against the Louisa Lions where they cruised and slaughtered the Lions. Next they ran into a very tough opponent in the Eastern View Cyclones who they had played well against well all year. After a shaky start on defense, they regrouped and kept the Cyclones scoreless for the majority of the rest of the game. The Cyclones defense held the Chargers scoreless however, and the season ended for the Chargers earlier than liked. Despite this, they still had a good growing year as the team will look forward to next year for revenge a goal to ultimately come back out on top and revive the programs’ incredible history.

The Chargers’ volleyball team experienced a very up and down year, as they floated around a .500 winning percentage all year but it was still a great season that was filled with tough opponents. The Chargers finished their season with a record of 10-8 which was good for a third seed in their district tournament. Overall the Chargers won 34 sets and lost 30 sets, led by team captain Brittany Margelos and three other seniors on a fairly young team. In the playoffs, the Chargers cruised early on to knock off the Caroline Cavaliers, but fell short in the semifinals against the King George Foxes who came energized. It was another great building season for the team that will look forward to a large senior class next year and look to knock off their rival, the Courtland Cougars. One of the Volleyball team’s strongest components this year was their wall in front of the net, led by Joselyn Jones and Sydney Collins who recorded a great year with more blocks than anyone else on the team.

The last sport I did a majority of the coverage for this year, and the most popular spot by far that filled the stands both at home and away games all season, was the Varsity Football team. This team was loaded with 21 seniors, 20 who were starters, and the entire student body had been looking forward to the 2016 season for years. Why? Because the team already has multiple players with offers to play at Division One schools including Senior stand-out Yetur Matos who has committed to a great school and program in Penn State. Also, don’t forget the wide receiver who leads almost every offensive category, E.J. Jenkins, who has committed to Old Dominion with a terrifying presence standing tall and strong at 6’6. More seniors have received offers and will probably see more before the season ends, but for now their sights are set on Friday as they host a playoff game for the first time since 2009.

This season for the Chargers included an incredible start which saw a road game against Riverbend to open the season and a home game against Massaponax. The Chargers met this test head on, with two victories that almost nobody else outside of Chancellor was predicting. The Massaponax game was one to remember, as it ended 50-47 as a completely full stadium couldn’t sit still. A Week 3 loss to Eastern View was a bit disappointing, but it will be great fuel for the Chargers if they get to see them again for revenge after being beaten in overtime. And if not for a rain-delayed game that put the Chargers on a two week bye and a field that wasn’t ready to be played on, the Chargers may have had a perfect first half. The loss to James River is the only blemish this year on an otherwise incredible season, but that loss is completely in the past for the Chargers.

In the second half of the season, the Chargers never lost a game sweeping away opponents including Courtland, James Monroe, Caroline, King George, and Spotsylvania to charge their way into the postseason. Over the course of these five games, the Chancellor defense outscored opponents 235 - 44. The football team will now set their sights to the Friday game at home against Powhatan High School.

Thank you fall sports for an incredible season!

Chargers Slaughter Knights At Regular Season Finale

Varsity Football : Chancellor Chargers vs. Spotsylvania Knights

The Chancellor Chargers (8 - 2) went on the road to face the Spotsylvania Knights (1 - 9) Friday night for their season finale, and the Charger machine was on full force as they rolled to a 68 - 0 win. The Chargers went old school with a primary rushing attack that tore apart the Knights all night as the Chargers as a team ran for 333 yards.

As the Knights were celebrating their Senior night, the Chargers prepared for their last test before a home playoff game next week against either Monacan or Powhatan. They got off to a quick start as the defense forced a three-and-out, and then Sophomore Damonte Pratt returned a punt for 45 yards to give the Chargers a quick advantage.

In the next drive Senior Noah Manuel, who just recently received a Division One offer this past week, picked up a sack and forced another Knights' punt. The Chargers picked up good field position for a quick field goal to extend the lead to 10 - 0. Then, only three minutes later, it was Junior Lovell Armstead running into the end-zone from 18 yards out for his first of many touchdowns on the night.

In the second quarter, backup quarterback Freshman Trevor Gleason took over for Senior Jason Brown and helped set the team up for another field goal making the lead 20 - 0. After the Knights picked up their only first down of the first half ten seconds into the second quarter, the Chargers put the ball back in Brown's hands who handed it to Armstead, who then proceeded to run 56 yards to the end-zone for his second touchdown of the night.

Later in the half as Gleason took over quarterback duties again, the Chargers charged down the field allowing Gleason to run 17 yards for a running touchdown of his own. With two minutes left in the half, the Chargers called a timeout to stop the clock and see if they could put up some more points. When they did get the ball it only took one play for Armstead to break away for 56 yards and his third touchdown of the night to make it 40 - 0 going into the half.

The Chargers started off with the ball in the second half and they continued to find their way into the end-zone. Brown handled things with a 21 yard pass to Manuel for another seven points. Then after the defense shut down the Knights again and forced a fumble, it was Pratt rushing in for his second touchdown of the night to make it 54 - 0.

Early in the fourth quarter the Chargers didn't let up as Senior Dorian Robinson ran 15 yards for a touchdown of his own. Senior Ruben Niamien also found his way into for a touchdown from 31 yards out with eight minutes left in the game to cap off the Chargers scoring for the night with a lead of 68 - 0.

The Chargers offense was rolling all night, with the only time they came off the field without scoring coming in with less than two minutes left in the game. Brown and Gleason traded off duties for the majority of the night, with much credit being due to Gleason who was in his second of three games for the week as the JV team will play in a championship game Saturday morning.

Next week will be huge for the Chancellor Chargers as they head home as the number 3 seed to face off against either Powhatan or Monacan.

Chargers Roll Over Knights In Final Home Game

JV Football : Spotsylvania Knights vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers passing game lit up the Spotsylvania Knights' secondary Wednesday night. Chargers receivers combined for 263 out of the 334 total yards of offense thanks to some perfect passes from No. 5 Trevor Gleason. It was the Chargers who came out on top, with a 34 - 0 shutout win.

The Chancellor Chargers defense recorded its' sixth shutout of the season tonight, only allowing 114 total yards of offense. The defense also picked up two sacks by No. 44 and No. 77. The first sack by No. 44 caused a fumble that would later be cashed in for seven points by the Chargers' offense. And just to look even better, No. 26 had an interception of his own which was turned into points as well.

In the first quarter the Chargers started things off well with a 35 yard punt return by No. 19 to set up the Chargers with some good field position. The Chargers then proceeded to charge down the field 64 yards thanks to a big pass from Gleason to No. 26. The Chargers did have some dropped passes later in the quarter, but it didn't impact the game as they left it in the past and focused on the next play.

The second quarter was featured with two more touchdowns by the Chargers. The first touchdown came with nice field position again, and another big pass which set up a running play for No. 29 Terrance Shepard who punched it in. The second touchdown came off a huge pass from Gleason to Grant Amos, who dodged Knight defenders for 44 yards into the end-zone. As the half ended, the Chargers held a 21 - 0 advantage.

Headed into the second half, the Chargers offense was held a bit more in check as the were only able to get three points. Despite a bit of an offensive stall, the defense made sure that the Knights stayed well out of reach of scoring and keeping the shutout intact.

I  the final quarter, Gleason stayed in for long enough to get another impressive drive in that included a 38 yard pass to No. 88 Dawson Garrett that would eventually set up another touchdown run for Shepard. After this, No. 18 Jordan Staats replaced Gleason and did fairly well as he continued to efficiently pass the ball. After one more late field goal, the Chargers kept the Knights scoreless for the rest of the night and won the game.

Chargers Struggle In Semifinals Against Foxes

Varsity Volleyball : King George Foxes vs. Chancellor Chargers - Postseason

Tuesday night was a tough one for the Chancellor Chargers (3 Seed), as consistency problems dug a hole that couldn't be climbed out of as the King George Foxes (2 Seed) cruised to a 3 - 0 sweep. Senior Eryn Suttle, however, had an impressive ending to her high school career collecting 8 kills on 11 hitting attempts.
The Chargers get energized before the game.
Match 1 was purely dominated by the Foxes, who penetrated the Chargers' defense with a constant spiking attack that left no room for error. The Chargers did what they could, recording 3 blocks but it just wasn't enough as the Foxes found holes and exposed them for points. With a final score of 25-14, the Chargers had fallen behind early and couldn't get back up.

Match 2 reflected some of the same troubles for the Chargers, as King George miscues weren't taken advantage of. The Chargers did continue to be consistent with serving, not recording a single fault in the match while the Foxes had two. The Foxes kept with their strong offensive attack, continuing to spike and find holes which became the Chargers' downfall. The final score of Match 2 was 25-7.

Match 3 was much closer compared to its' predecessors. The Chargers established a lead early and kept it that way late into the match as drives were set up by Junior Haley McDaniel and Senior Brittany Margelos. The Foxes pulled together and charged with a 5 point drive late to tie things back up late and to eventually steal a match that should've been won by the Chargers. The extended match ended with a score of 26-24, ending the game and the Chargers' season.

The King George Foxes will move on to play the Courtland Cougars on Thursday night for the District Championship. This game marked the end of the Chancellor Chargers' season, which had plenty of highlights and bright moments to boast. It also saw the Senior campaigns of Eryn Suttle, Bella Conrad, Ashleigh Jenkins, and Brittany Margelos. The Chargers finished an impressive season with a record of 11 - 10, going 1 - 1 in the playoffs.

Great season Chargers!

Chargers Dismantle Foxes, Clinch Home Playoff Game On Senior Night

Varsity Football : King George Foxes vs. Chancellor Chargers

Friday night was another showcase for a sturdy Chancellor Chargers defense, which only allowed 63 total combined yards against a King George Foxes team that has shown all year to have a devastating offense and running game. The Chargers held that running game in check however, and rode on another great performance by Senior Quarterback Jason Brown to shutout the Foxes 42 - 0.

"It feels like we are a part of the history," Chargers Senior E.J. Fields spoke after the game. "It feels great that I was able to fight with my brothers, it's awesome. We've been fighting this whole season, fighting since we were freshman." E.J. Fields was part of a powerful defense that silenced the Foxes.

Early on in the first quarter, Brown tossed his first gem of the night with a thirty yard touchdown pass to Junior Brandon Johnson. It was a rough start for Brown with some incompletions, but he was able to get it under control and find his targets. After the defense forced a three and out, the offense was back on the field and the Chargers quickly found their way into the end-zone again. Brown tossed the ball to Senior E.J. Jenkins down the sideline, who then made a devastating cut to find only open field in front of him and run seventy-three yards for a touchdown.

With only two minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Chargers found a way to charge down the field on the back of their Junior Running-back Lovell Armstead who made impressive cuts to get them into scoring position. Then, Brown took it in himself with an eight yard run that made it 21-0. To end the half, Senior Yetur Matos found his way through the offensive line and punished the Foxes' quarterback sending the Chargers booming into the second quarter.

The Chargers' defense didn't waste much time in the second quarter to show their dominance again, as Senior George Brown recorded a sack of his own to kill any chance of a Foxes' drive. The Foxes then muffed the punt, adding on to their long list of mistakes on the night and giving the Chargers good starting position.

The Chargers took advantage of this, and Jenkins found himself putting up six points for the second time of the night with a nine yard touchdown pass from Brown. The Chargers offense even continued to roll after going up 28-0, but interceptions in the end-zone cost them points and kept them from running up the score early. Senior Ruben Niamien and Sophomore Damonte Pratt both had interceptions of their own however, which stalled the Foxes' offense. After Niamien's interception, the Chargers were able to head into the half with a comfortable 28-0 lead.

The Charger defense started off the second half forcing another three and out, continuing to show their overwhelming presence. Both Matos and George Brown were able to pick up their second sacks of the night in the third quarter. The defense also made two big 4th down stops, both on plays where the Foxes only needed a yard or two but couldn't push it across.

The Chargers continued to play great offense, as Jenkins caught his third touchdown pass of the night from Brown, giving the Chargers a 35-0 lead. The Chargers were able to shake off a bunch of flags that had been hurting them all night, showing the ability to get over their mistakes and focus on the next play.

As the fourth quarter came along, the Chargers quickly put seven more points on the board with a thirty-four yard touchdown pass from Brown, who was falling backwards, to Senior Deshawn Parish. This capped off and ended an incredible night for Brown, who recorded 6 touchdowns.

"I treat every week like it could be our last," Brown said after the game. "We wanted that home playoff game and knew we needed to execute on offense. They stopped us on a few drives.. but the defense stepped up big."

The Chargers ended up winning 42-0. This is a huge win for the team, as they clinched the Battlefield Region and a home playoff game. Next week they will head on the road to face the Spotsylvania Knights and close out their regular season.
