Chargers Dismantle Foxes, Clinch Home Playoff Game On Senior Night

Varsity Football : King George Foxes vs. Chancellor Chargers

Friday night was another showcase for a sturdy Chancellor Chargers defense, which only allowed 63 total combined yards against a King George Foxes team that has shown all year to have a devastating offense and running game. The Chargers held that running game in check however, and rode on another great performance by Senior Quarterback Jason Brown to shutout the Foxes 42 - 0.

"It feels like we are a part of the history," Chargers Senior E.J. Fields spoke after the game. "It feels great that I was able to fight with my brothers, it's awesome. We've been fighting this whole season, fighting since we were freshman." E.J. Fields was part of a powerful defense that silenced the Foxes.

Early on in the first quarter, Brown tossed his first gem of the night with a thirty yard touchdown pass to Junior Brandon Johnson. It was a rough start for Brown with some incompletions, but he was able to get it under control and find his targets. After the defense forced a three and out, the offense was back on the field and the Chargers quickly found their way into the end-zone again. Brown tossed the ball to Senior E.J. Jenkins down the sideline, who then made a devastating cut to find only open field in front of him and run seventy-three yards for a touchdown.

With only two minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Chargers found a way to charge down the field on the back of their Junior Running-back Lovell Armstead who made impressive cuts to get them into scoring position. Then, Brown took it in himself with an eight yard run that made it 21-0. To end the half, Senior Yetur Matos found his way through the offensive line and punished the Foxes' quarterback sending the Chargers booming into the second quarter.

The Chargers' defense didn't waste much time in the second quarter to show their dominance again, as Senior George Brown recorded a sack of his own to kill any chance of a Foxes' drive. The Foxes then muffed the punt, adding on to their long list of mistakes on the night and giving the Chargers good starting position.

The Chargers took advantage of this, and Jenkins found himself putting up six points for the second time of the night with a nine yard touchdown pass from Brown. The Chargers offense even continued to roll after going up 28-0, but interceptions in the end-zone cost them points and kept them from running up the score early. Senior Ruben Niamien and Sophomore Damonte Pratt both had interceptions of their own however, which stalled the Foxes' offense. After Niamien's interception, the Chargers were able to head into the half with a comfortable 28-0 lead.

The Charger defense started off the second half forcing another three and out, continuing to show their overwhelming presence. Both Matos and George Brown were able to pick up their second sacks of the night in the third quarter. The defense also made two big 4th down stops, both on plays where the Foxes only needed a yard or two but couldn't push it across.

The Chargers continued to play great offense, as Jenkins caught his third touchdown pass of the night from Brown, giving the Chargers a 35-0 lead. The Chargers were able to shake off a bunch of flags that had been hurting them all night, showing the ability to get over their mistakes and focus on the next play.

As the fourth quarter came along, the Chargers quickly put seven more points on the board with a thirty-four yard touchdown pass from Brown, who was falling backwards, to Senior Deshawn Parish. This capped off and ended an incredible night for Brown, who recorded 6 touchdowns.

"I treat every week like it could be our last," Brown said after the game. "We wanted that home playoff game and knew we needed to execute on offense. They stopped us on a few drives.. but the defense stepped up big."

The Chargers ended up winning 42-0. This is a huge win for the team, as they clinched the Battlefield Region and a home playoff game. Next week they will head on the road to face the Spotsylvania Knights and close out their regular season.

Chargers Charge To Postseason Win Over Cavaliers

Varsity Volleyball : Caroline Cavaliers vs. Chancellor Chargers

Thursday night The Chancellor Chargers played host to the Caroline Cavaliers, and dominated the entire game. The Chargers didn't allow a single successful kill, while recording thirty kills of their own, helping them outscore Caroline 75-25 and sweep the match-up.

Early on in the first match, the Chargers showed some shakiness in a quiet gym, allowing Caroline to benefit off of some miscues. Despite those miscues, they managed to regroup and build a great lead and take control of the match. Junior Sydney Collins helped with this early victory, recording seven successful kills out of eight attempts. At the end of the match, it was team captain Brittany Margelos leading her team with a drive of four points to close things up.

Match 2 was almost completely in the Chargers' favor, as they were very close to shutting out the Cavaliers. While up 6 - 2 in the match, an under-the-weather Senior Bella Conrad came onto the court to serve, and she didn't leave the serving line for the rest of the match. She led the Chargers to a 19 point drive with three aces of her own. The Chargers took match 2 cleanly, coming within one match of moving on in the tournament.

In the last match of the game, the Chargers showcased the same dominance they had shown all game. Junior Payton Clarke led the way with 13 successful spikes in the match, leading multiple players off the bench to a good win against the Cavaliers. Junior Jessica Dixon ended the game with an impressive spike that captured a win for the Chargers and helped them move on.

Early Mistakes Cost Chargers Heavily In Semifinals Against Cyclones

Varsity Field Hockey - Playoffs : Chancellor Chargers vs. Eastern View Cyclones

The Chancellor Chargers (3rd Seed) traveled to the home of the Eastern View Cyclones Tuesday night, and a sturdy Cyclones defense held them scoreless. It was early on that cost the Chargers heavily as the Cyclones No. 2 pushed across two goals to jump out to an early lead. The final ended up being 3 - 0, ending the Chargers' season.
The Chargers get ready to storm the field.
Within the first five minutes of the first half, the Chargers were already looking at a scoreboard that wasn't shining in their favor. Two early goals by some miscues by the defense helped the Cyclones score early and successfully put on an impressive pressure. Despite keeping the Cyclones' out of the net during multiple corners, the Cyclones still found a way to score.
The Chargers discuss strategy at halftime.
The Chargers were able to calm down and keep the Cyclones scoreless for the rest of the half however, as experienced Coach James Larkin called a timeout to get his ladies minds back into control on the cold night. With six minutes left in the half, No. 12 Bethany Newton made a nifty save with her stick in front of the net, preventing anymore damage from being done. After a failed last attempt to push across a goal for the Chargers, at the half it was the Cyclones leading 2 - 0.
Naiomi Nichols continued
a great season at the net.

The Chargers opened up the second half with some good pressure, pushing the ball into Cyclone territory and causing a couple of corners to try and cut their deficit in half. The Cyclones' defense held, however, and the Chargers struggled to maintain possession of the ball for the rest of the night.

The Chargers' goalie No. 26 Naiomi Nichols continued to have a great year at the net, collecting six saves in the first half, and three in the second half doing everything she could to keep the team in the game. The Cyclones' were able to push across one more goal late, as No. 11 charged forward and made a nice shot that gave the Cyclones a 3 - 0 lead before the game clock ran out.

This loss ends the Chancellor Chargers season, as the Eastern View Cyclones will play on Thursday in the final game of the tournament. The Chargers had a great season, building talent on a fairly young squad with multiple underclassmen. They also graduated six seniors who had incredible careers and their teammates won't forget the memories they all made together. It was great covering the games I was able to this fall, and I wish the best of luck to all of the players on the team in their futures. Thank you for all the incredible games!

Chargers Storm To Postseason Victory Against Lions

Varsity Field Hockey : Louisa Lions vs. Chancellor Chargers

On Monday afternoon, the Chancellor Chargers (3rd Seed) took on the Louisa Lions (6th Seed) at home, in a game that belonged to the Chargers. The Lions didn't even get a single shot off on the Chargers' goal, as the Chargers' offense kept possession and pressure on the Lions all day.

In a first half that featured five Charger goals, it was proven early on that the Chargers were ready to move on. In less than two minutes, it was Senior Lilly Church with a quick goal to start the day of scoring. After some nice saves by the Lions' goalie, it was Freshman Emma Bernard continuing to stay hot with a goal of her own that echoed off the trees as it hit the back of the goal. Five minutes later, she did it again scoring her second goal of the day. She went on to score two, yes two, more goals in the half to give the Chargers a 5 - 0 lead and total control over the game.

In the next half, the Chargers continued to show dominance, continuing to never let the Lions even gain possession of the ball. There were four more goals scored, and there was no doubt in anybody's minds that the Chargers would be moving on. The Lions' goalies No. 98 and No. 97 both had some great saves, including one save by No. 97 on a penalty shot from Church. Other than that, though, the Chargers kept the pressure on long enough in a game that couldn't be shortened.
Tomorrow night the Chancellor Chargers will head to Eastern View High School to play in the semi-finals.

Notables

  • Saves : Louisa - No. 98 (6), No. 97 (2)

Chargers Steamroll Cavaliers On Wet Friday Night

Varsity Football : Caroline Cavaliers vs. Chancellor Chargers

Nothing else could be said about the Chancellor Chargers win over the Caroline Cavaliers Friday night other than pure dominance. The Chargers totaled 422 yards in offense, and the defense kept the Cavaliers quiet all night with a final score of 63 - 14.
The Chancellor Chargers' sideline was rocking all night.
In the first quarter, the Chargers put up 21 unanswered points to take an early lead with the help of the legs of Junior Lovell Armstead and the arm of Senior Jason Brown. The Chargers forced a Cavaliers three-and-out to start the game, and then drove down a short field with big rushes from Armstead to put up seven points. On the next Cavaliers possession, the quarterback No. 5 fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Chargers. Again, the Chargers charged into the end-zone thanks to an incredible effort from Junior Michael Bush to extend the lead.

Armstead found his way again into the end-zone with less than a minute remaining in the quarter when he sprinted his way to the end-zone for another Charger touchdown. The Charger defense also put on a great display not giving up a single first down. They did this with a powerful defensive line led by Senior Yetur Matos who recorded the games only sack.
Chancellor's Cheer Squad cheers on the football team.
The second quarter began, and the Chargers were quickly putting up more points. Before even a minute had passed, the Chargers had seven more points thanks to an amazing 49 yard pass from Brown to his favorite target senior E.J. Jenkins. Jenkins towered over the two defenders as he was able to jump up and pull down the ball easily.

With six minutes remaining in the first half, the Cavaliers were given a second life and their only first down of the half as the Chargers were penalized for roughing the kicker. The Cavaliers quarterback made a bad decision though, as he let the ball fly and it was intercepted by Senior Laplante Alexandre and returned for 40 yards.
Quarterback Jason Brown continued to dominate
against the Cavaliers.

The big interception helped set up another touchdown as Brown tossed the ball to Senior Deion Atkinson answering the Chargers' "Chaos" section who could be heard cheering, "We want Deion!". The "Chaos" section went into a frenzy as their favorite player to cheer for gave the Chargers a 42 - 0 lead.

On the next drive, it was another interception for the Chargers that set them up for some points but this time it was Damonte Pratt who hauled it in to give the Chargers possession. Then, seconds later, it was freshman back-up quarterback Trevor Gleason with a nifty two yard run for his first ever rushing touchdown at the varsity level. At the half, it was the Chargers with a massive 49 - 0 lead.

The Chargers didn't let up going into the second half. Armstead continued to have an incredible night as he returned a kickoff for 79 yards, recording his third touchdown of the night. The rest of the third quarter went by pretty quietly, as the clock kept ticking due to a slaughter rule that was in effect. The Cavaliers did put some points on the board, however, as their quarterback ran 35 yards for a touchdown and six points because of a muffed extra point.

The Chargers defense resembled a brick wall tonight.
The Chargers saw some new faces in new places on the field with the huge lead in the fourth quarter, and one of those faces was Junior Brandon Smith with a 9 yard rushing touchdown to extend the Chargers lead.

The Cavaliers quarterback used his legs well in the second half, as he did get the teams' second touchdown of the night with a 47 yard touchdown run to put some more points on the board. The Cavaliers also tried and succeeded a 2-point attempt. This brought the final score to a big Chancellor win, 63 - 14.

Next week the Chancellor Chargers will play host to division rivals the King George Foxes, in a game that will have huge playoff implications and is the Chargers' last regular season home game of the year.

Chargers Slaughter Knights On Senior Day

Varsity Field Hockey : Spotsylvania Knights vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chargers honor their Seniors before the game.

As the Chancellor Chargers and Spotsylvania Knights squared off Thursday afternoon, there was no better word than dominance to describe the Chargers effort. Seniors Tess Hogan and Lilly Church led the way on Senior Day with three goals between the two of them. The Chargers cruised to an easy 6 - 0 win hoping to roll into playoffs.

(Senior Send-Off at end of article).

In the first half, the Chargers sent a harsh reminder to the Knights about the last time these two teams faced off. The Chargers smacked in four goals which was the same amount they opened up their last game against the Knights. Freshman Amy Bernard started off the day incredibly well quickly shooting two successful goals to give the Chargers an early advantage. Later in the half, it was Hogan knocking in two goals of her own to extend the Charger lead and capitalize on multiple impressive offensive drives. The Knights struggled to maintain possession as the Chargers were all over the field and forcing corner shots numerous times. The Chargers rolled into the second half with a large 4 - 0 lead.

The Chargers line up with their Seniors one last time.
The second half brought more Charger goals and a quick end to the day. The Chargers were able to knock in two more goals, which put the slaughter rule into effect. The Knights desperately tried to keep the game alive, but the Chargers defense held strong and tied a bow on the great game. Church scored an amazing goal from a considerable distance to highlight her Senior Day early in the second half, and then later on it was Bernard with her third goal of the day that put the nail in the coffin for the Knights. The Chargers came roaring off the field as the referees called the game and they had ended their season on a high note.

Next Monday, the Chancellor Chargers will open off the postseason against the Louisa Lions at home. They will look to build off these last couple of late-season wins and turn it into something special with a very young Varsity squad.

Chargers Recover On Incredible Senior Night To Shut Down The Knights

Varsity Volleyball : Spotsylvania Knights vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chargers line up together one last time.
The Chancellor Chargers came into Thursday night with emotions running high and the stands crowded with families and friends celebrating some of the seniors' last home game. Also, Senior Bella Conrad sang the national anthem by herself to start the game, which set the emotional mood for the night. Those emotions showed early, but the Chargers cleared it up and roared back for a 3 - 1 win against the Spotsylvania Knights.

(Senior Send-Off at end of article)

In the first match, Coach Bob Walsh filled his starting team with all four seniors on the team for the night, and they stayed their for the majority of the night and it was well deserved. The first match was a bit shaky, as miscues and faults let the Knights keep a lead. It was still a very close match, as rallies seemed to last forever and the Chargers gave it their all on every play. The Knights' No. 6 had sparks flying off her hand as she spiked the ball continuously leading her team to an early lead. The Knights rode to an early game lead with a Match 1 score of 25-20.
Senior Bella Conrad was owning the serve all night,
serving 20 times without a single error.

The second match was when the Chargers really found their footing and started to show glimmers of dominance. Senior Brittany Margelos brought her team together before the match recharging some energy and getting them ready and it showed. Junior Mackenzie Coates spiked the ball with fiery intensity along with Senior Eryn Suttle to pulverize the Knights' defense. Senior Bella Conrad also helped her team drive to a lead early with her serves that set up Charger points. The Chargers showed some more consistency in a tight match, as they pulled away late to take Match 2 with a final score of 25-21.

Match 3 seemed just as intense as the two before it, as the crowd really started to get into it. The Knights struggled to get any points at all as the brick wall in front of the net (also known as Juniors Sydney Collins and Maddy Burnard) kept any Knights attempts at spiking the ball to fail. The crowd was electrified, and the Chargers put together multiple drives led by Junior Arianne Parker, Conrad, and Margelos who helped serve their team to victory. Coates also greatly helped her team racking up her ace total on the year even further. At the end of the match, it was the Chargers with a commanding 25-11 victory.

The final match of the night had the home crowd roaring. The Chargers absolutely dominated with their seniors on the court as Suttle and Conrad continued to have amazing nights. Senior Ashleigh Jenkins had her way as well as she set up multiple hitting attempts and had nine of her own. The Chargers didn't even let the Knights breathe as they quickly jumped out to a large lead and knocked out the Knights. After the Chargers scored 21 points, all the seniors were escorted off the court with a standing ovation from the crowd. Just to put a cherry on top, Collins knocked in her 11th block of the night to lock up a Charger victory. The final, fourth match, ended with a score of 25-8.
The Chargers always showed great spirit and teamwork this season.
Next week the the Chancellor Chargers will look forward to the playoffs, with their first game on Thursday night.

Chargers Steal Defensive Match-Up With Foxes

Varsity Field Hockey : King George Foxes vs. Chancellor Chargers

Team Captain Sarah Stillabower helps her team keep the pressure on
the Foxes' defense.
The Chancellor Chargers played host to the King George Foxes Tuesday afternoon in a game that didn't see its' first, and only, goal until six minutes into the second half. The lone goal came off the stick of Senior Lilly Church, and it helped cap off an incredible showing of the Chargers' defense. The final score was 1 - 0, with the Chargers pulling together another win.
The Chargers debate a plan
of how to push across a goal.

In the first half, the Chargers maintained possession of the ball for a majority of the time during the first half putting constant pressure on the Foxes' goalie. They racked up six shots on goal, however none were successful as the Foxes' goalie made an impressive showing with her four saves. The Foxes weren't able to get a single shot off, as the Chargers did an incredible job of keeping the ball out of their own territory. Junior Kristine Giraldi and Freshman Emma Bernard saw the most time with the ball, being able to push forward and make sure the Foxes had to work twice as hard to even get a chance at getting possession. After one half, the score was locked 0 - 0.

The second half saw some of the same incredible defense by both teams, but it was the Chargers who were able to push across a point. Church was able to get the ball with only the goalie in front of her, and made a nifty shot into the back of the net to give the Chargers the lead. The Foxes didn't go down quietly, as they made multiple pushes into Charger territory and shot the ball three times at the Chargers' net. Sophomore Naiomi Nichols made sure that the Foxes wouldn't be able to tie things up, as she made some amazing saves and kicks to keep the ball out of her net. With only 3 minutes left in the match, the Foxes made one last drive that was spoiled by Sophomore Taylor Sullivan as she stole the ball and ran it into Foxes' territory to lock up a win for the Chargers with a final score of 1 - 0.

The Chancellor Chargers will play their last game on Thursday afternoon against the Spotsylvania Knights, which is also Senior day as the team will thank and send off their six seniors.
The Chargers celebrate a great team win.

Chargers Can't Hold On, Drop Intense Match To Foxes

Varsity Volleyball : King George Foxes vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers started off their last week of the regular season against the King George Foxes. Both teams have had a very similar season so far, both looking evenly matched Tuesday night. Both teams showed dominance the entire night, but it was the Foxes who pulled away victorious 3 - 1.
The Chargers lineup for player introductions before the game.

Match 1 began and it seemed as if the Foxes were off to a hot start and the Chargers were in trouble. That changed, however, as Senior team captain Brittany Margelos led her team on a 5 point drive that brought them back into a close match with the Foxes and it stayed that way. The Chargers were able to hold off a spiking attack from a dangerous No. 2 on the foxes, thanks to many blocks by middle-blockers Joselyn Jones and Sydney Collins. The Chargers weren't able to hold on, falling behind late and dropping the match to the Foxes with a close final score of 25 - 20.
The Chargers show unity before facing Foxes.

Match 2 brought along the same intensity as the first, and the Chargers showed a more powerful attack while taking advantage of multiple Foxes' mistakes. The Foxes had four faults in the second match, which ultimately put them in holes they couldn't climb all the way out of. Multiple four-point-drives by the Chargers helped them stay in the lead, as they won a match of their own and tied it up 1 - 1. The final score of Match 2 was 25 - 22.

The Chargers came charging into Match 3, with Junior Haley McDaniel starting it off with two aces to build an early lead. The Chargers and Foxes played neck and neck for the entire match, and both teams came up clutch with numerous saves and blocks. Most notably for the Chargers was Margelos, who recorded six saves as she dived left and right around the court. This kept the Chargers in a close match-up, as the Foxes added to their spiking attack with No. 9 who was terrorizing the Chargers defense. In the end, with the closest match score of the game, it was the Foxes who took the game lead with a score of 25 - 23.

Awaiting the next incredible rally.
Match 4 started like the two previous matches with the Chargers jumping out to early leads. An early drive put them up by four points, but the Foxes were quick to respond as they collected themselves on a timeout and the team captain No. 50 brought her team back to its' feet. It was a very clean match, as only one fault was recorded in what had been a fault heavy game. The match was just as close as all the others, but the Foxes were able to end the night as they finished the game with a 25 - 22 final match score.

The Chancellor Chargers will regroup and look forward to a game on Thursday night at home against the Spotsylvania Knights who they swept earlier this year in a much closer game than the final score indicated.

Chargers Spoil Yellow Jacket's Homecoming Game

Varsity Football : Chancellor Chargers vs. James Monroe Yellow Jackets

Friday night's football game between the Chancellor Chargers and James Monroe Yellow Jackets provided an incredible display from the Chargers defense that iced a high scoring team. Coming into this game the Chargers had lost three straight to the Yellow Jackets, but that streak was snapped as the Chargers won 24 - 7.

Following Senior Yetur Matos' broken record the previous week, Senior quarterback Jason Brown tossed two touchdowns to break the Chancellor record with 78 total touchdowns in his fourth year at Chancellor.

The Chargers continued their success on their first drives this year after their defense forcing a quick three-and-out. They charged down the field 56 yards with a pass from Brown to Junior Brandon Johnson for a quick 7 points, tying the school touchdown record for Brown. The defense continued to dominate for the rest of the quarter, as they allowed no points and only allowing one first down.

To start off the second quarter, Yellow Jacket quarterback Zakk Davis tossed a pivotal interception to Sophomore Demonte Pratt. Senior Yetur Matos was probably the biggest contributor to this interception, who brought major pressure and annihilated the 'Jackets quarterback. Ten minutes later, it was Chancellor back on the board grabbing more points before the half ended. Brown tossed his second touchdown of the night, breaking the Chancellor record, to Senior Noah Manuel.

For the entirety of the first half, the Chargers showed a dominating defense that had struggled in the past. They prevented the run play with ease, and rarely gave up a passing play that went over five yards. This was a huge performance against a team that had been averaging over 30 points a game this year.

The Chargers got the ball to start off the second half, and again continued to show success. They charged down the field thanks to a 49 yard pass on third down from Brown to Senior E.J. Jenkins allowing Senior Austin Seipp to kick a 34 yard field goal to extend the Chargers lead to 17-0.

At five minutes left in the third, the Chargers had a it of a scare as their running back Lovell Armstead was hit head on and lost the football, but the turnover was negated as the Yellow Jackets got hit with a huge face mask penalty to give the ball back to the Chargers. Other than this play, Lovell Armstead couldn't be stopped the entire night especially in the second half, making great cuts and slipping through tackles creating an incredible running performance. He ended the third quarter with a rushing touchdown from 22 yards out to extend the Chargers lead to 24-0.

In the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets switched out their quarterback for a change of pace to Sophomore Sean Smith who sent a jolt into the offense scoring a quick 7 points with his legs, ending the impressive defensive shut out. Later on in the quarter, Matos recorded his second sack of the night which started to pad the record he set previously and continue his amazing senior year.

As the clock hit zero, it was the Chancellor Chargers on top with a final score of 24 - 7. Big credit can be given to the Chargers front line consisting of Yetur Matos, E.J. Fields, Zack O'neal, Logan O'neal, and George Brown who protected their quarterback all night and created running room for the running back.

Next week the Chancellor Chargers will go back home to play host to the Caroline Cavaliers and will look to stay perfect in divisional play.

Chancellor Crushes Caroline On Night of Aces

Varsity Volleyball : Chancellor Chargers vs. Caroline Cavaliers

The Chancellor Chargers flew through Thursday night's match-up on October 13th with pure dominance against the Caroline Cavaliers. With 21 total aces by the Chargers, the Cavaliers were shocked and unable to recover as they never held a lead against the Chargers in any of the three matches. At the end of the night it was Chancellor on top, winning 3 - 0.

In match 1 the Chargers hustled their way into a early lead and maintained dominance throughout the entire match. Led by Junior Mackenzie Coates, who totaled 6 aces in the first match alone, the Chargers dominated serve play for the night and kept the Cavaliers in holes too big to dig out of.

The Chargers continued to show incredible defense and it was impossible to tell this was their third game of the week in as many days as the hustle hadn't changed and nobody looked lost for breath. They spiked with ferocity unmatched by their opponents, resulting in a 25-7 final match score.

The Chargers continued to charge into match 2, where they maintained dominance on both sides of the ball. Chancellor reduced the faults as well in this match, which made Caroline work more for their points. Incredible blocks by freshman Joselyn Jones and Junior Sydney Collins highlighted the Chargers defense for the second match, creating a brick wall at the net that was impossible for the Cavaliers to break.

Senior Eryn Suttle continued to have an impressive week as well, as she recorded three more hitting attempts with kills that tore apart the Cavaliers defense. Despite giving up some more points up to Caroline this time around, it was still a match in Chancellor's control the entire time with a final match score of 25-12.

Chancellor put a bow on their week of games with an impressive match 3 win against Caroline that completed the sweep for the night. With multiple diving saves from Seniors Bella Conrad and Brittany Margelos, the defense continued to put pressure on Caroline giving Chancellor more attempts to put away a rally and give them points.

Senior Ashleigh Jenkins notched an impressive performance as well, as she was perfect serving for the night with 16 serves and no faults. Her final drive came in match three that pushed her total of serves, and helped the Chargers' cap off the night with a final match score of 25-9.

Chargers Defense Rolls Against 'Jackets

JV Football : James Monroe Yellow Jackets vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers were putting points on the board throughout the night against the James Monroe Yellow Jackets on October 12. Quarterback Trevor Gleason for the Chargers had a great night racking up 123 passing yards and 46 rushing nights, having a hand in all five of the Chargers' touchdowns. The defense though deserves the most credit, as their eight sacks led the team to another shutout, 35 - 0 victory.

The first half was when the Chargers did the majority of their damage. Two big passes, one for 17 yards and the other for 36 yards, were offensive highlights. A muffed punt by James Monroe was what really set up the Chargers for the night, as the kicker was unable to get the ball of in time and it gave the Chargers great starting position to then light up the scoreboard.
The Yellow Jackets weren't able to figure out the Chargers defense, as they were held scoreless for the first half and were unable to piece together any drives down the field. This was thanks to a Charger defensive line that was putting pressure on the Yellow Jackets quarterback all night, causing miscues and failed plays. After the first half, it was a 21 - 0 Chargers advantage.

The second half saw the same trend as the first half, as the Chancellor defense continued to show pressure and force James Monroe mistakes. Even when the Yellow Jackets seemed to finally be putting a drive together, an incredible interception by Isaiah Maginat erased any thought of the Chargers giving up a single point. Running back Darius Lee also created his own highlight with a rush of 51 yards down the sideline to set up an eventual seven points for Chancellor.

Next the Chargers will head on the road to compete against Caroline, and try to continue their scoreless streak beyond 12 quarters.

Chargers Sweep Yellow Jackets Thanks To Stingy Defense

Varsity Volleyball : James Monroe Yellow Jackets vs. Chancellor Chargers

The Chancellor Chargers started off a long week against the struggling James Monroe Yellow Jackets tonight. Mistakes by the Yellow Jackets helped propel the Chargers to a swift and easy sweep. Senior Eryn Suttle lead the way with eight kills on nine hit attempts, five of which came in the first match. The Chargers' ability to clean up their game after a rough start was also a big contributor to their 3 - 0 quality win over the Yellow Jackets.

In the first match, the Chargers were caught off guard and were a bit shaky. The Yellow Jackets fought them closely for most of the match which featured four faults for both teams who showed struggles during the serves. The Chargers were able to regroup and control the match back in their favor however, as coach Bob Walsh called a well-timed timeout early in the match when things seemed to be falling in the Yellow Jackets way. After the first match, the Chargers only committed one more fault for the rest of the game. This was when the Chargers started to show true dominance even with a close match score of 25-20.

The second match rolled along and Chancellor maintained complete control the entire match. With a big performance from junior Sydney Collins who recorded three blocks to stun James Monroe's attacks. Chancellor literally dug deep and showed a great overall defense that left James Monroe winded and stunned to the spot. They also went the entire match with only a single fault which was a complete turn around compared to the match from before. The Chargers played much cleaner, and it led to an easy 25-12 match win.

The third match came and went quickly, as the Chargers just continued to prove how good they are. The score tallied up quickly, and the defense continued to show its strength. Senior Bella Conrad contributed two saves and three digs in the final match, along with her teammate Joselyn Jones who was an absolute wall up front with three blocks. The Chargers' play just kept getting cleaner and cleaner which is a great sign with another game right around the corner tomorrow night. The Chargers charged home with a final match win of 25-16, improving to 7-6 on the season, above .500 again and looking to build on it.

Tomorrow Chancellor heads to King George to compete against a good challenge in the middle of their triple header this week.

Volleyball and Field Hockey Triple-Header and Big Road Battle for Football Headline Second Week of October

The only day Chancellor athletics gets off this week will be Monday, and after that the schedule is packed with big match-ups for all sports. Chargers Field Hockey looks to build off last week's’ encounters with Spotsylvania and Courtland, as they take on some conference foes. Chargers Volleyball looks to improve on their even record, with two of three games against schools inside their conference. Lastly, to round off a big week for Chancellor, the Varsity football team will head on the road to face a five win James Monroe team that is currently leading their region.

Tuesday night will features the Field Hockey Chargers’ lone home game this week against James Monroe. The field hockey team will look to climb back into the win column to try and right a wrong record to get into the playoffs that start in a couple weeks. Seniors Tess Hogan and Lilly Church will look to lead their team into finding a way to control the ball which has been plaguing them all year. Goalie Naiomi Nichols has had an outstanding year so far considering how much time opponents have spent in Chargers territory, so look for her to continue to show that success this week. The very next day they will turn around and head to King George to play a rain make-up game under the lights, against a tough King George opponent. This Wednesday night game will be a must-win for the Chargers if they will look to be productive in the postseason, and to gain some momentum to build off of. To end the week, the Chargers will head on the road again Friday night to play Caroline to round off a long weekend.

Just like Field Hockey, Chargers Volleyball will open up their triple-header week against a struggling James Monroe team at home. The varsity volleyball squad is sitting right at a 6 - 6 record right now, and this would be a good week to climb out of .500 and produce a winning record. A James Monroe squad that hasn’t won a game this year will start the Chargers’ week off, and they will look to start it well after sweeping this James Monroe team back in September. On the following night the Chargers will head to King George to take on a team that has also shown it’s struggles this year. The Chargers will have to stay focused however, as playing on back-to-back nights can be rough. To end off the week, and three straight days with games, the Chargers will get back on a bus and head to Caroline to face an opponent they swept earlier in the year and has also been struggling to find it’s footing. The Chargers Volleyball team has a very good chance of sweeping the week with wins if they can stay focused and come into every night with renewed energy.

Chargers Varsity and Junior Varsity Football has the opportunity to turn in some great games this week as well. An encouraging 3 - 1 Junior Varsity team will host James Monroe Wednesday night looking to improve on their home record. Varsity football, however, will play a game with playoff implications on Friday night. They will face a tough road test against a 5 - 1 James Monroe team that has already proven they are looking at a playoff run this year. Chancellor will look to pull themselves back into first place with a big win, but they’ll need to show the same energy on defense they did this previous week against Courtland and continue to stay healthy. Quarterback Jason Brown will look to break Chancellor’s TD record as well, as he is only two away from breaking it. The Chargers will also look to hold on to the ball, facing an opponent that forced four turnovers against Caroline.

Chargers Defense Regroups, Recovers, and Destroys Cougars

Varsity Football : Courtland Cougars vs. Chancellor Chargers

Not only was Friday night's match up between the Chancellor Chargers (4 - 2) and Courtland Cougars (2 - 4) the Chargers' homecoming game, but it was also an intense rivalry match up which was bound to see huge hits and incredible plays. Most of those incredible plays fell the Chargers way, as a balanced running and passing game led them to a strong 38-23 win over a tough Courtland defense, pushing the Cougars to give up more points than they had all season. Charger junior running back Lovell Armstead ran for 128 strong yards, which helped set up almost every scoring drive for Chancellor.

A long-standing record was also broken Friday night. Senior Yetur Gross-Matos notched his place in Chancellor Chargers history with his 2 sacks tonight, breaking the all time record at Chancellor that was set 26 years ago. Both of his sacks came in monumental moments in the game, forcing Courtland into situations they couldn't come out of successfully.

This electrifying rivalry game started off just like you'd expect any high-intensity game. With something nobody saw coming. The Chargers won the coin toss, electing to differ and receive the ball in the second half which gave Courtland the ball to start, or so they thought. There was a fumble on the punt, and it was recovered by Charger No. 23 Jeff Pates which gave both the ball and good starting position to the Chargers who cashed it in for seven points thanks to a rushing touchdown from Jason Brown from nine yards out. Both teams' defenses held well for awhile, until a quick minute long drive by the Chargers hooked them up with another seven points to extend their lead over the Cougars. Two passes from Jason Brown that went over 20 yards, and then a 30 yard rushing touchdown by Lovell Armstead was enough for a Charger touchdown.

The Cougars weren't ready to just lay down and get steamrolled, however, as they opened up the second quarter with a rushing touchdown of their own from Senior Christian Coleman who pushed in seven points for Courtland. A penalty and sack killed the Chargers attempt at returning the favor with a touchdown of their own, as they failed to convert a fourth and long to give the ball back to the Cougars. The Chargers would get the ball back quickly, and march down the field again where it seemed like they came up just short and were going to punt. Instead, head coach Bob Oliver sent out the field goal team, and No. 12 Austin Seipp kicked an unbelievable 45 yard field goal through the upright. This gave the Chargers a ten point lead which would come greatly in handy as a 45 yard pass from Courtland's Junior James Banks shortened that lead to an uncomfortable three points. The Chargers were able to push into the red zone on their next drive, but failed a 4th down conversion at the goal line and went into the half with a score of Courtland 14 Chancellor 17.
As the third quarter rolled along, the Chargers wasted no time finding a way into the end zone as they charged down the field and ended with Jason Brown's second rushing touchdown of the night. Both defenses stood strong again, preventing any landslide of points to come across. Offenses stalled until there was 3:47 left on the clock and Jason Brown tossed a fade pass to his favorite target E.J Jenkins into the end zone for seven more Charger points. And just to make things more sweeter for the Chargers, when the Cougars got the ball back, they were met by the fierce power of Yetur Gross-Matos who punched in his first sack of the night to end the third quarter. The Chargers left Courtland completely scoreless for the entire quarter.
No. 1 E.J Jenkins before catching
a fade TD pass from his QB.

The fourth quarter brought both worry and joy to Chancellor fans. Things seemed to be going the Cougars' way early as they returned a fumble in their own territory for 75 yards and seven points to draw closer to the Chargers. Then, the Chargers had their punt blocked on their next drive which put the Cougars in a very good position to strike a quick 14 points on the board. But, possibly saving the Chargers' night, No. 11 Cameron Kniebbe picked up a fumbled ball to turn things back over to the Chargers, who then muffed a punt to give the Cougars two more points on a safety and making it a one score game. Tempers flared as some brush ups blew up on the sideline as the rivalry showed it's nasty side. Nothing severe ever occurred though, and tempers were calmed down and the game was finished. On the Cougars' next drive, they turned it over again, and this time it was No. 23 Jeff Pates who picked up another fumble and ran it all the way in for a touchdown to secure a win for the Chargers who ran the clock down for the rest of the night.

This win was extremely important for the Chargers who were playing on a short week after losing Monday to James River. This puts them back in the win column, and back on track for a successful playoff run. Everybody stayed healthy, and there was plenty of great performances to go around. There are still some miscues, but they are easy to fix and improve on for next week as the Chargers travel to take on a hot James Monroe Yellow Jackets team who currently has a five game winning streak going. The Chargers will have something in store for them, though, as they look to start divisional play off well.
