Varsity Football : Chancellor Chargers vs. James River Rapids
The Chancellor Chargers (3 - 2) went on the road to face a powerful James River Rapids (3 - 2) team. Turnovers ended up being the downfall for the Chargers on a slippery field that didn’t help holding on to the ball at all. It was close until a forth quarter collapse as the Rapids won 44 - 21
In the first quarter the Chargers came into the game rolling forcing a quick Rapids three-and-out, allowing the offense to take over and provide a big drive ending with a fade pass to No. 1 E.J Jenkins into the end zone giving the Chargers an early lead. When the Rapids got the ball back, they ran the ball all the way down the field and into the end zone, missing the PAT and trailing by one. That touchdown was met with a Charger response of their own however as No. 18 Jason Brown ran and pushed the ball into the end zone.
The Rapids continued to dismantle a hurt defensive line with their devastating run game that scored them two more touchdowns before heading into the half with a 20 - 14 lead. Chancellor also struggled converting fourth downs as they tried to find a way to get on the board. The half ended on a good note however as No. 55 Yetur Gross-Matos recorded the only Charger sack of the night.
To start the second half, it seemed as if the Chargers were ready to come out rolling as a pass over the middle to No. 3 Noah Manuel from Jason Brown went all the way for a touchdown and sparked the Chargers sideline. After that, multiple mistakes ended up costing the Chargers big time. The Rapids scored 24 unanswered points against a stressed Charger defense. A couple interceptions here and a couple fumbles there and suddenly frustration sat in on a team that knew they could do better.
They will have that chance to rebound and show that electrifying offense this Friday at their homecoming game as they play host the Courtland Cougars. Jason Brown is also inching towards that touchdown record, and the Chargers would definitely love to see him break that this Friday.
