Varsity Football : Chancellor Chargers vs. James Monroe Yellow Jackets
Friday night's football game between the Chancellor Chargers and James Monroe Yellow Jackets provided an incredible display from the Chargers defense that iced a high scoring team. Coming into this game the Chargers had lost three straight to the Yellow Jackets, but that streak was snapped as the Chargers won 24 - 7.
Following Senior Yetur Matos' broken record the previous week, Senior quarterback Jason Brown tossed two touchdowns to break the Chancellor record with 78 total touchdowns in his fourth year at Chancellor.
The Chargers continued their success on their first drives this year after their defense forcing a quick three-and-out. They charged down the field 56 yards with a pass from Brown to Junior Brandon Johnson for a quick 7 points, tying the school touchdown record for Brown. The defense continued to dominate for the rest of the quarter, as they allowed no points and only allowing one first down.
To start off the second quarter, Yellow Jacket quarterback Zakk Davis tossed a pivotal interception to Sophomore Demonte Pratt. Senior Yetur Matos was probably the biggest contributor to this interception, who brought major pressure and annihilated the 'Jackets quarterback. Ten minutes later, it was Chancellor back on the board grabbing more points before the half ended. Brown tossed his second touchdown of the night, breaking the Chancellor record, to Senior Noah Manuel.
For the entirety of the first half, the Chargers showed a dominating defense that had struggled in the past. They prevented the run play with ease, and rarely gave up a passing play that went over five yards. This was a huge performance against a team that had been averaging over 30 points a game this year.
The Chargers got the ball to start off the second half, and again continued to show success. They charged down the field thanks to a 49 yard pass on third down from Brown to Senior E.J. Jenkins allowing Senior Austin Seipp to kick a 34 yard field goal to extend the Chargers lead to 17-0.
At five minutes left in the third, the Chargers had a it of a scare as their running back Lovell Armstead was hit head on and lost the football, but the turnover was negated as the Yellow Jackets got hit with a huge face mask penalty to give the ball back to the Chargers. Other than this play, Lovell Armstead couldn't be stopped the entire night especially in the second half, making great cuts and slipping through tackles creating an incredible running performance. He ended the third quarter with a rushing touchdown from 22 yards out to extend the Chargers lead to 24-0.
In the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets switched out their quarterback for a change of pace to Sophomore Sean Smith who sent a jolt into the offense scoring a quick 7 points with his legs, ending the impressive defensive shut out. Later on in the quarter, Matos recorded his second sack of the night which started to pad the record he set previously and continue his amazing senior year.
As the clock hit zero, it was the Chancellor Chargers on top with a final score of 24 - 7. Big credit can be given to the Chargers front line consisting of Yetur Matos, E.J. Fields, Zack O'neal, Logan O'neal, and George Brown who protected their quarterback all night and created running room for the running back.
Next week the Chancellor Chargers will go back home to play host to the Caroline Cavaliers and will look to stay perfect in divisional play.
