Early Mistakes Cost Chargers Heavily In Semifinals Against Cyclones

Varsity Field Hockey - Playoffs : Chancellor Chargers vs. Eastern View Cyclones

The Chancellor Chargers (3rd Seed) traveled to the home of the Eastern View Cyclones Tuesday night, and a sturdy Cyclones defense held them scoreless. It was early on that cost the Chargers heavily as the Cyclones No. 2 pushed across two goals to jump out to an early lead. The final ended up being 3 - 0, ending the Chargers' season.
The Chargers get ready to storm the field.
Within the first five minutes of the first half, the Chargers were already looking at a scoreboard that wasn't shining in their favor. Two early goals by some miscues by the defense helped the Cyclones score early and successfully put on an impressive pressure. Despite keeping the Cyclones' out of the net during multiple corners, the Cyclones still found a way to score.
The Chargers discuss strategy at halftime.
The Chargers were able to calm down and keep the Cyclones scoreless for the rest of the half however, as experienced Coach James Larkin called a timeout to get his ladies minds back into control on the cold night. With six minutes left in the half, No. 12 Bethany Newton made a nifty save with her stick in front of the net, preventing anymore damage from being done. After a failed last attempt to push across a goal for the Chargers, at the half it was the Cyclones leading 2 - 0.
Naiomi Nichols continued
a great season at the net.

The Chargers opened up the second half with some good pressure, pushing the ball into Cyclone territory and causing a couple of corners to try and cut their deficit in half. The Cyclones' defense held, however, and the Chargers struggled to maintain possession of the ball for the rest of the night.

The Chargers' goalie No. 26 Naiomi Nichols continued to have a great year at the net, collecting six saves in the first half, and three in the second half doing everything she could to keep the team in the game. The Cyclones' were able to push across one more goal late, as No. 11 charged forward and made a nice shot that gave the Cyclones a 3 - 0 lead before the game clock ran out.

This loss ends the Chancellor Chargers season, as the Eastern View Cyclones will play on Thursday in the final game of the tournament. The Chargers had a great season, building talent on a fairly young squad with multiple underclassmen. They also graduated six seniors who had incredible careers and their teammates won't forget the memories they all made together. It was great covering the games I was able to this fall, and I wish the best of luck to all of the players on the team in their futures. Thank you for all the incredible games!
